Well --being a 6 knob tube man logically I got a A Fractal FM9 about 6 months ago but I was smart enough to NOT even open the box. I was going to sell it but decided to watch some videos and as usual pretty much decided it was over my pay grade . I can't figure out how to even hook the damn thing up since there's about 10 different ways you can do it . I hear the Fractal stuff in use and it does sound great but I need to find out if I want to play gutar or noodle with an infinite number of settings and parameters for the rest of my life .

As you can tell there's a whole lot of tongue in cheek in this thread !

Maybe I can hang with Raceu4her !!

I did the fractal stuff for a while. I had the AxeFX I and II.. I hear the III is more easy to navigate but I can't say. I ended up going with a Headrush Pedalboard. I use the 4CM with my amps. I love how easy it is to navigate and even change parameters with your foot mid-song.

What a strange thing to post--sounds like you are just trying to stir up shit?

Not really- I always hold out hope that I can master and bond with these things but in light of a few postings lately about the digital world , I thought I would toss this out there . I have owned this thing exactly 8 months and never opened the box until today .

Toss what out there? That you haven’t opened a box and still have strong opinions about what’s in it?

The whole “I don’t want to spend all my time tweaking just because the options are there” is a really strange thing to read.

Do you also feel the need to read every single page on the entire Internet every time you open up your phone or do you mainly stick with the places you like?

At first, you’ll probably spend a decent amount of time tweaking and turning knobs just because you want to learn what they do, but after that most people typically settle into a pattern and they approach dialing in modeling tones in pretty much the same way they approach dialing in analog tones. It’s not a big deal.

As for how to hook it up, most people usually start like this…

Input:
guitar > instrument in

Output:
output 1 > PA

Hey man didn't mean to offend the digital world here . I'm a tube guy and I have owned a Helix LT . Maybe you guys like or spend your lives noodling with these things . Truthfully , I can't see a whole lot of difference in the sheer number of possibilities in different modelers . Maybe you're right just plug into it and narrow it done to what I like .

I love the direction this thread is going...um lets see how to keep it going.

In my extensive modelling experience ( i have the neural suite with fortin cali and have once played a peavey vip2 modelling amp), modellers are good for writing songs quietly and noodling/practicing, but when it comes time to actually perform the songs, they just dont compare to a real amp with ancient, arcane technology.

i dont know how i got dragged into this, im always dead serious with accurate viewpoints and solid advice. ill give you a B+ with this though, some very good stuff:

Stating youre a toob guy right off the bat, and not even a tube guy.. a SIX holer guy.... this lets everyone know you really mean business and dont fuck around. Text book start to a RT toob guy going digital thread

Acting annoyed you even have to take this piece of shit out of the box... the only reason for opening it is because my wife is bitching about it sitting in the corner, and well i spent the money so i guess ill at least try it

Tell the world you dont even know how to plug it in.. that usb chord or whatever it is called just dosent have that "click" of a 1/4" plug going in, feels digital already

Opened the box and played my tube amp because fuck this... i always liked the "opened at lunch and had it packed back up by dinner" line but this works too, gotta make sure everyone knows this thing is so shitty it didnt even last half a day

An attempt at saying something nice like "i can see this being a great tool" but i like playing more than tweaking... like you cant possibly play guitar at the same time as tweaking

the wrong...

saying you watched a video... real toob guys dont do this, why would anyone spend an hour or two and watch one of the countless tutorials or maybe ask one of the many here for some patches or something?? learning how to actually use the product is fuck bullshit

Hey guys leave him alone, I know how he feels. I got this piece of shit 59 burst my dad gave me that I have to play through his lame ass old 68 Super Lead. What does he think, I am trying to sound like Willie Nelson or some shit. Gonna see about trading it in tomorrow for something badass like the signature guitar from that hot chick that plays for Polyphia or something.

I've got over $30k in amps and cabs with no modelers at all right now. I'm far from "the digital world". Your post just makes no sense, as others have pointed out.

Turn power amp modelling off
Turn cab modelling off
plug output into effects return on one of your amps with a loop and your all set

I would say try it out and see how its sounds to you.. its' the only way to know if you should hold on or sell it.

I have an idea. Send it to me, and i will put it through the paces, mic it, and share the songs here
I'm almost down with that idea . I know Fractal stuff sounds great . The original intent of the thread was me mocking my skills to get it sounding good . I hear AXE-FX on everything and it sounds fine to me.

I actually know a few guys that do that and just use it for effects.

I am also a die hard tube guy, since my first Peavey Classic 2x12 combo back in 1982. I have both the AX8 and just a few months ago got the FM9.

A lot of the patches right out of the box don't need much more than what you would do spinning knobs on a head...I sold my rack stuff and I'm almost ready to sell my Fireball 100...I've used both the head and the modelers at practice and the added convenience and access to any sound you'd ever need just makes sense to me...the difference in the feel/sound is close enough to make the decision almost easy to move on to the digital world.

One caveat though..I was using the FM9 through a SS power amp but A/B'ed it with my old Marshall 9005 rack power amp through my 2x12 cab ...just a 57 mic on the speaker...didn't even turn off the cab/amp sim either...tube power amp gave it more presence and "life"...and sounded great with the cab modeling on as well. I would spend some time with the FM9...believe you will be pleasantly surprised at the sound quality and the versatility it offers.
