cool vid, tips and explanation how he goes about tracking guitars

I'm always a little surprised when I hear a full song, then hear the guitar track alone - how low gain it is. Fluff does this on a lot of tracks. The full tune sound thick and metal, the guitar alone is almost ZZ Top level gain.

cool post thanks!! :)

does anyone know what tuning Misha would be in here on his 6 string?

This video wasn't that good at all. It was super basic and not that great. It was fine if you have no idea ever on how to record but other than that , fairly remedial. And who the hell would use that interface, horrible.

I imagine the video wasnt really aimed at advanced users. I found it interesting, although it didnt teach me anything i didnt already know. Was just cool to see the techniques in practice. I just enjoyed the riffage! Sounded pretty big for a basic mix.

As for the interface, focusrite wouldnt be my personal pick either but he got good results and i very much doubt an interface worth gazillions more money would have made an audible difference, especially at 44100.

Yea, you might be surprised. You get a lot for a gazillion dollars these days...

Lol no doubt! I think Apogee is about to release a new interface for the ipad worth a bazzillion gazillion dollars. Should be pretty sweet

This shit is hilarious. True RT right here. Why does it cost $$$$ to make recordings. I have heard great stuff recorded on 4 track cassette tape. That interface may not be the blah blah blah RT flavor of the week but in the right hands I am sure a radio hit could be and probably has gone through something not as good. All I am saying is don't focus on the tools focus on the result. Too many of us get caught up in the minutiae and mentality of well George Plynch used a sm57 and a royer 121 into a neve 1272 and a Langevin am16 then into a lexicon PCM into a Urei 1176 and so on and so on and so on..... Sad! Just F***ing record with what you have and try to get the best sound you can. Man it's all about experimentation. Just like practicing on the guitar the more you record the better your stuff will sound.

P.S. Don't get me wrong I am a total gear whore but at the end of the day all that gear doesn't matter if the product you put out sounds like shit because you don't know what your doing with it.

I think the intent WAS to be simple and direct for beginners. Seemed like it to me.
He's just talking quick demos with home budget gear.

You are correct on all points.
Classic albums we have listened to for years were recorded with far inferior equipment than what this kid is using.
What those old albums were created with was talent, determination, ideas and skill. Things that are sorely lacking these days.

I have the 2x4i midi version. Great for home use and the money. It does what it needs to.

Where was the holy grail B2   :poke: instead he used a Jackson :scared:

And yet the guy is selling albums, and making money doing music. Perhaps he's doing something right.

It's aimed at beginners, and that interface is just fine for beginners. Not everyone has or needs a Royer pointed at a Diezel running into an Apogee.

Watched the vid on to the gain staging, just wanted to comment the riff in that video is really bad ass. I love the rest note in it. Good job Misha.

I enjoyed the video. Who cares if it was basic? If you didn't glean anything from it, move on to something more advanced. I follow the same basic principles he uses in a different way.

My recording equipment is absolutely cheap. Whether I mic'ed up my amps with a 57/e609 or the KPA direct I have been using my $120 M-Audio Mobile Pre USB for the past 10 years. About as low end as you can get but I have been very happy with the results I get. I am just a novice when it comes to home recording and have no desire to move forward. To each his/her own.

BULLSHIT!!!!

Classic albums used amazing mic pres, and recorded to 2 inch son!

BULLSHIT!!!!

Then why do a lot of classic albums sound like dog shit? My last sentence in my original post is the bottom line. Go buy all the best equipment in the world, if you can't use it or don't know how to write a song none of it will matter.

Way to go Jr. I see sweeping generalizations are your speciality. ;)

Who says that a mic pre from the 60's onto tape is "better" than a modern digital ad/da audio interface? Its a matter of taste and opinion really. If tape is the holy grail, why did the recording industry (not just music) move on? Technology evolves and improves. Im sure Misha has the coin to buy whatever vintage mic pres he wants, but if he gets the results HE wants with a "home" market interface then what does it matter?! If you need vintage gear and a struder to think you sound good thats cool man! Horses for courses! :)

FWIW, there are countless great songs recorded at home on very humble and basic gear.....

Too many Pumpkins songs to list
Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral
Bruce Springsteen – Nebraska
The Rolling Stones – Exile on Main St.
Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
Bob Dylan and the Band – Basement Tapes
Guided by Voices – Bee Thousand
Iron and Wine – The Creek Drank the Cradle
Radiohead – OK Computer
Mountain Goats – Full Force Galesburg
Many Jeff Buckley songs......and the list goes on.
