I've got a chance to pick up a locally owned Boogie traditional 4x12 at an excellent price. Way too good to pass up actually. So I'm going to jump on it.

But I've never run different size 4x12's in a full stack. My other cab is a Boogie "over-sized" Recto 4x12. I know there is no issues as far as power rating and impedence, but what about sound. I'll be running my 5150 II through the cabs and thought they might actually compliment each other in the way they reproduce the mids and lows differently. Maybe fill in the spaces where each is a little weaker. Any opinions?

I haven't had the chance to run 2 different sized 4x12's together but I do know that the traditional 4x12 will have more of a mid emphasis with less bass and ever so slightly less highs, while the recto 4x12 (which I own) will have more of a thump with a slightly more scooped nature and high end sizzle.

I have a mix of Mesa V30's and Mesa C90's in there now, I'd like to try this mix in the traditional and see which would sound better for my needs (I like this setup in the recto 4x12 so far)

I could never stand the low rumble of the recto cabs. It was always too much bass for me. It seemed to take over more of the bass player's sonic territory than I preferred. I like the tighter traditional cab.

I didn't care for the oversized, straight recto cab but I had the slant and really liked it. Actually, I think I prefer smaller slant cabs altogether with the exception of the D412 which to my ears is a perfect mate for the D60.

As far as the OP, it's purely subjective. Let your ears decide.

My over-size is the slant model built into the straight cab. I've always liked the way it sounds. I don't know if I would like a true straight cab in the over-size though. I would guess the slant over-sized to be very close to the same internal volume as the straight traditional that I am getting today.

Too bad my amp is down right now. A power tube shorted out and took something else with it. It will be going to the tech in two weeks. I'll just have to look at my full stack till then. And we all know how  just being able to look at your full stack is.
