I just picked up a MOD 50 with 5881's. The T/D modules was too bright at last night's gig. I couldn't find the sweet spot. I've played many great BF Fenders and I could'nt get the amp to sound sweet with the T/D module. Any suggestions on how to get warm and punchy clean tones?

Also some SL settings would be greatly appreciated. I'm gigging for the next 4 nights and want try and dial this amp in before the weekend.

Thanks,
Billy

Man, it's kind of tough to help here. What guitar/pickups? Speakers?

Sounds like "warm and punchy" is bassman module for you. Do you have any spare 12AX7's around? or a 5751? Try putting a different one in V1.

What are your current settings on the T/D? Keep bright switch off, lower treble? How about your presence? Keep it at 9:00 or lower.

SL - I'd run the module volume for A pretty high, then turn the gain up to your level. Master at least 11:00. I run the bass lower to keep from flub, so like 9:00. Mids at noon or so, then treble around 2:00.

You may want to try a different set of power tubes as well.............just to see.

Usually saying "too bright" with Bruce's amps just don't make a lot of sense, so there may be something tube wise that's out of whack. Just keep playing around and don't be afraid to really turn those knobs and play with the switches. Go with your ears and not your eyes.

Keep us posted.

The amp has Sovtek 5881's in the power section and a WA in the P.I. I put a Jan 5751 in V1 of the T/D module and a NOS RCA in V2. I tried the amp with the treble boost in and with it off. I also tried the same with the bass boost. The speakers are a Scumback H75 30 and a GH12H30 in a open back cab.

Here's my settings from last night.
Ch.A Gain - 1:00
Ch.B Gain - 11:00
Treble 11:00
Mids 12:00
Bass 11:00
Ch.A - Volume 3:00
Ch.B - Volume - set to match channel A volume

Presence - Off
Density - Off

What speakers are you running?

On the T/D, try setting everything at noon and Bass Boost at "2" position and work from there. Bright switch off.

I agree - if it's too bright that's odd.

Also, I agree on the SL - set module masters first.

Hmmmm, kind of strange.......although those H30's can be bright speakers. I like to mix with an M style or just use an M by itself.

Wonder if the power tubes are kind of wearing out? Those settings should not yeild a real bright tone.

Maybe try to max A volume and drop the gain a tad. Maybe drop the mids back to 11:00.......sometimes those can add that "hardness" there.

Where was your Master??

I'd try to turn up the density as well......maybe like 10:00.

High or low power??

Density and Presence off, to my ears, never yeilds great results... you need at least SOME of both.

Can you give us some reference points on how you want your SL tones?

I'm getting good tones with the SL module. I'm running the SL with the bass boost and treble boost off. Bass is at 10:00, Mids 2:00, and Treble 12:00.

I'm having better luck using the D/L module with the bright and bass boost off. I prefer the Deluxe channel for cleans. Bass 9:00, Mids 10:00, Treble 11:00.

Do these settings look normal? I'm going for a Brent Mason type clean tone. I'm setting the SL up to get a classic pushed Plexi vibe.

That's why alot of us prefer either the T/T or the D/D since it seems sort of difficult to get both sides of the T/D eq'd so they both sound their best.

D/D is great as well as you still may want to try a bassman in the future.

For you current gigs, try and get by with your clean D side if you can. Those settings seem fine. Just again, run the module master high so you can have some headroom on the D side.

I think Jeff can make your T/D into a D/D if I'm not mistaken. Maybe worth a shot..............

Kevin is spot on. When you get the T side where you like it the D side is not how you want it. To have both work does call for compromise on both. Now if you dig the D side then just have the module converted to D/D. Or T/T and usually everyone is happy!

I have a D/D.

What I do is run the module master volume on full, and use the gain knob as if it were a volume knob. Then it really feels like a non-master volume amp in a lot of ways.

I've had a few gigs on the MOD 50 to realize what a great amp it is. It's definitely not a plug in and play amp. After some tweaking I'm getting some nice tones. I'm more of a Vox guy so I'm going to get the VX. Anyone wanna trade a VX for a T/D?

Glad it all worked out. VX is a great module!

Thanks guys. For those that use the SL module, how are you setting yours?
