A few months ago I bought a 2000 Marshall JCM 2000. It needed a cap job and some TLC. I was "solder-shamed" on this forum so I man-ed-up, did some reading and research and got busy. It ended up being so much fun and such a cool learning experience. First I changed all the caps on the main board. Then I did some minor things that are recommended mods for DSLs. I then added a Hammond choke, swapped out the stock OT for a Classictone and lastly, did a "Fortin" modded that was discussed on this forum a few years ago.
IMO, it turned out so good and wanted to mention it here but also wanted to include a clip. So for now, here is a down and dirty 2 minute thing that I just did with a Tascam DR-07 sitting on my desk about 6-8 feet from the cab.
I used the guitar I built myself back in 2005 with a mahogany body, flamed top and a Dimarzio Steve's Special in the bridge. It has .010s on it now because I'm trying to strengthen my hands a bit. I usually use 9's. Honestly, I think I'll go back to 9's on this one. My girly-hands can't take it.
As for the amp, presence is 6, treble 8, mids 6, bass 5, deep switch in, tone shift out, Lead 2. Gain is at 5. Volume is at 1. I'm running the amp through a Bogner Uberkab with the stock speakers. It's a front-loaded cab. Guitar is straight in with nothing in front and a TC Flashback in the loop on the 2290 setting.
I do suck at recording and of course, the amp sounds better to me in the room but I think you can still get the idea in terms of how the mods have effected a stock DSL.
