AFAIK solely from what I can deduce from clips here and there, the Splawn Quick Rod is a good way to get the tone of a cranked Modded JCM 800 without spending the 3k to do it or having to crank it up. a. is this accurate b. what other amp/s could do it better at around the same price (cheaper than a JCM 800)

For low volumes i wouldn't look at the Quickrod. I thought it needed some volume but I'm sure the next 3 Splawn owners that chime won't agree with me. But regardless, the Fortin Cali mod does low volume a lot better than any other Marshall style amp I've heard, Cameron's aren't bad either.

Put it this way, my Axe-Fx with a Mesa 2:90 does not sound better than the Cali mod for low volumes...and any other volume. :D Some guys claim the Axe-Fx sounds better than anything for low volumes, i haven't found that to be the case.

I agree, the Cali does low volume better than most other amps i have played. Even better than the Boogie Mark III i used to own!

You'll have to define "low volume".

Sure sure. Not like dismal, but more along the lines of 'acceptable' for living conditions in a small-ish room with a few others in the house as well as pets. I play with my 50w head on 3 now and that's a decent volume. Or lower for practice volumes but boosted when tone isn't critical.

Sounds like my situation, and the Quickrod didn't cut it for me.

If I put my 2204 on "3" on the master volume, it shakes our entire house.

Same with my GH50L.
Although it does sound great with the master at 1.5 and a boost in front.

There are some amps that have GREAT master volumes (Fortin for sure), but they might be out of the intended price range.

Marsha has the best master volume I've ever heard...unbelievable at TV volume!

Firedman modded Marshall 2203 I have has a killer Master as well. I play basement level a lot at all hours with the family sleeping above and it tears it up. The dog lays at my feet too so he must not be bothered...

Do you need the low volume amp to also get loud? Because you can grab a Friedman modded JCA20 for 5 bills that sounded killer. Heck, my HT-5 gets close too.

Well the newer Quickrods have the loop volume on the back so that you can crank the power tubes but keep the volume tamed. However, the amp does sound best firing on all cylinders.

Another idea is a modded Marshall Class5. They are pretty inexpensive, not sure what a mod would cost. The only issue is they are still not quiet from what I understand and if you want the punch of a 100Watt amp, the Class5 won't deliver.

This to the Dans!

It really is the best sounding amp I have played at low volumes (and only gets better with volume). Not trying to pimp my newest vid but towards the beginning you will hear me play at low volumes and the crazy amount of sustain and usable feedback.

To answer your question, yes I would be looking for an amp that is a full tube 100w head with the JCM style tonality but with more gain. Although I think the 800 may be my overall favorite metal tone of all time, it sounds like a Tiny Terror at practice volumes  Looking for a workaround 'high-gain' version of that tone.

Perhaps you are looking in the wrong place?

Think "pedal".

Try the Wampler Plextortion to start you on your journey.

Good luck!

If you get a quickrod...i suggest a Weber Mass with it. Cuz I get better tones with using it cuz I run the master at 12noon to get those powertubes a cookin!

Friedman master volume is awesome, sound great at any volume
