Depends who is doing the modding, which pedal you are using, the tone/sound you want, the volume you want that sound at. Too many variables.

A great modded Marshall beats a stock Marshall with pedals.
A great stock Marshall with pedals beats a lame mod any day.

Great tone is all in the ear of the beholder! You can check youtube all day and listen to what someone lables "best Marshall tone ever", and wind up scratching your head in disbelief.

Yeah...I agree about tone being within the ear of the beholder. I've owned many "great" moded Marshalls and I'm telling you without a shadow of a doubt that this setup (Plexi + pedals) I have now can hang with and actually sound better than pretty much all of them. My ears don't lie :D

All I know is thread made me want to go out and play my '73 Superlead. Doing that now. See ya.

I've gotten great tones from boosting with boosts, OD, dist pedals etc but they always seem to add something I don't gel with.

Whether it's a Carl Martin Plexitone, Suhr Shiba or a KOT (or many others), they can all sound extremely good but they are not the same as running into the amp by itself...IMHO.

The best way I've found for pushing the amp naturally with all the feel and dynamics is using an actual tube preamp pedal to push proceedings...it just feels like playing an amp to me personally, but everyone to their own. It's also much easier to adjust on the fly too.

I have found I just don't need a boost now but if I'm playing in non Jose mode, the tube preamp pedals work a treat...I've now sold off all my SS dirt.

which tube preamp pedals have you tried that really impressed you?

I do that with all my amps actually. Set them up for a nice mid-gain crunch, then hit them with my OD808. I find that it has the right level of saturation and touch sensitivity for me.

That's what works for me - Maxon OD808 -> Marshall JVM... Couldn't be happier!

I've got a couple of Kingsley pedals...the Juggler and Minstrel...they are proper hand wired plate voltage preamps in a stompbox and even have a little toriodal transformer. They boost my Yeti fantastically.

Got the PlexiTone today...it's VERY sweet. Pete Thorn's demo is dead on accurate. It's got a ton of gain on tap and sounds very amp like. It'll turn any single channel clean amp into a 3 channel Marshall...I shit you not.

I love modded tones myself, but nothing quite compares to my Supercharger GTO - Tube-Vibe - Fulltone TTE - EDT 13/29 rig. Dare I use the word... GROOVY?

METRO NOT A MARSHALL?!?!?!?!?!?!

ARE YOU FUCKING NUTS?!?!?!?!

PLEASE NIGGA SHUT THE FUCK UP...........................................
Metros are their own thing, they resemble Marshalls that's all, I never said that in the first place. Having spent 7+ years on metro amp forum you think I might know?
Nobody copping to the brilliance of George's JTM 45/100, since he builds all the amps around here at the moment, Camerons, Freidmans, ect.
The JTM 45/100 is the best amp George ever made and is classic Hendrix, AC/DC, all '70's rock.
Just the sweetest sounding 100watt amp to be had from 1966.
