been listening to a lot more clips, been lookin at the elmwood m90 and also now the splawn nitro.Anyone own both or have exp side by side?

I have owned an EL34 Nitro and the Modena 90.

IMO, and this is just me...really, I would take the M90 over the Nitro without any question. Now, its a lot more $$, but for me the Nitro was a monstrous disappointment, even after tube changes, bias check, and plenty of time to tweak. Just not for me...the M90 just had more to it, and much more complex tone.

Perhaps my expectations of the Splawn were way off from what the Nitro really is about, but it wasn't my gig. While I liked the Modena more, it too, didn't last too long since it didn't do anything better than the selection of amps I had at the time, which included an XTC and the SLO. Really cool amp though, if it were my only amp I think it would definitely cover a lot of ground.

+1...

nitro for me too was a huge disappointment of an amp..i was the first guy in the uk to get one..i spent weeks with it..again it wasnt for me..

im new to the elmwood amps and i have the m60..

as a lot of us guys on here have been through many amps..i can honestly say to date the elmwood is certainly my favourite i've owned..
i also own a bogner shiva..so i dont really have any desire to try any more amps out..they cover everything i need..

the elmwoods are very versaltile and the tone is exceptional..but its all subjective..
what works for me may not be the same for others..

I've never owned the Modena but did own a Nitro and I'd go with the Modena in a heart beat.

have you guys heard the clips on netmusicians.org of the nitro, esp the ones from fast red ponycar? they seam wicked cool?

so what do u play now?

My nicer amps are an XTC, Herbert and VHT UL.

The Modena would sit in there with these amps if I had more $$ to squander. I had an SLO and I dug the M90 more.

I **almost** traded my UL for the M60 not too long ago. I reeeeaaally want to try the M60, I think for me it might be the better choice over the M90, but who the hell knows! There are some KILLER M60 clips on youtube.

 To be fair, the Elmwood amps are on a totally different level monitarily speaking. This is obvious when you start looking at costs. But The Elmwood amps have this useable sweetness to them that I have NEVER, EVER experienced with any other amp. PERIOD! ;) They are just incredible for what they give you. I like Splawn amps a ton, but for me also the Nitro I had was a Huge letdown. Maybe it was me, I dunno ? :aww: but I only got one tone out of it and yes, I loved that tone but after that it was goosed, over. So these things I type are just my opinions on what I have been through, based on what I have owned. I also in fairness to Splawn have an amp that I consider PERFECT for what it is and I will never sell it, just like I would never sell my Elmwood modena 60. They are just different animals. I think personally one does something outstanding and then again the other also does something outstanding and they are both worth their weight and definately worth having. By the way Splawn has several models available and I am partial to the Pro-stock and the newest addition, the Super Comp. Chobley who is a member on this forum had not one but two Super Comp's at one time. Pm him and ask him about those and go listen to his clips. And also go listen to the clips on the Elmwood website. I think FlyAngus has about the best clips for the Modena's there are out. Hope this helps. ;)

When the Nitro showed up I was reading the reviews from guys over at HCAF and you would swear they were talking about a bass amp so I dropped all interest.

honestly......

I would be quicker to compare a QuickRod to a Modena before I would compare the Nitro.. I have owned a ProMod, a Nitro and two QuickRods and I LOVE the QuickRod...

but i would love to have a Modena too!!!

just dropped almost 6k on a Herbert and an Uberschall then got laid off after traing my replacements... Luckily I bounced back real quick but..... no Elmwood in the near future for me....

unless ... well the GAS attack strikes quickly!! lol

My only concern with the Modena 60 is if it has enough gain/agression.

also remember i have a herbert, a diamond phantom and a peavey 6505+...... all very gainy amps.

I had a competition, a spec op amd now an Einstien. Splawn make great amps but my Diezel is the one I have been searching for and will not part with...unless I can't pay the mortgage   If your gassing that bad for the nitro, go for it. I found it to be extremely stiff and lifeles. My einstein is like playing in High-Definition
