I got a used GR-33 guitar synth a few years ago. It came with a gk-2a midi pickup which was missing parts, which made installation "interesting". I put it on my Line 6 Variax. While the versitility was unreal, I didn't use it a lot because the Variax doesn't play or sound as good as some of my other guitars. I wanted a better controller.
Last night I installed a new gk-3 on my favorite guitar, a Parker Fly. Newer gk pickups can be installed without drilling into the guitar, and tracking isn't too bad if you set it up right. I got a chance to try it out for a few minutes, it's a massive improvement over using the Variax.
I ran the Parker through my Mesa Mark III, and routed the GR-33's synth tones through my bass rig (Peavey Firebass 700 & Mesa 2X10 bass cab). Running a distorted guitar tone through the Mesa along with one of the GR-33's bass tones sounded massive.
Overdriven chords also sounded great with a distorted organ (w leslie) patch layered in.
It looks a bit like a Borg impant, but Parkers are weird looking anyway.
