MojoTone solderless 50’s wiring kit... garbage?

I didn't know that these existed so no real feedback from me. However I have been interested in going 50's wiring in a LP and this could be a good way to do it can actually hold up.

Had a bridge pickup swap in the same LP right before all of the lock downs started and however they wired it back up, the neck pickup (59') is now much clearer than it was before. IDK.

Honestly? Even EMG quick connects come apart time to time. I actually cut those little plugs off and solder them in.

Four $50-$60 you can get four good pots (bourns or CTS) two PIO caps, a jack and a switch. And have probably enough to pay a tech to solder it in. Then it won't come undone.

All of my Gibsons, Strats, and Teles I have gone through and rewired with quality components (bouenes, Switchraft, and NOS green Russian caps) and good wire and they sound great. All were done in under an hour (I am a pretty good soldered). Saying that, a competent tech should be able to do it in an hour and probably would only be $60-70 to wire it in.

I don't trust quick connects myself. Never will. But I can see how appealing it is to many guitarists who do not know how to solder.

There are good vids online to learn how to solder from. Equipment doesn't cost that much. I've been using a Weller WLC100 for years and they're only $40. Since it's a Les Paul and if you decide to give it a shot, put two layers of painters tape around the edges of your control cavity before you start.

The kit looks nice and that connector will not fail (wires come loose)

Are you getting that kit just so you don't have to solder your new pickups?

Because if so it'll be cheaper just to have someone install them for you.

Thanks all.

So in Vegas, just to wire 2 pickups is about $150... $75 per. Then swapping the pots and all is additional. Probably better for me to actually learn how to do it. I mean, I know it's not rocket surgery (no offense to those who do this). I am generally a guy who fears the first time, then I'm all good. I have a soldering iron. Just need solder.

Yeah bro you can do it! Let me know if you have any questions or want to vid chat. Soldering is my favorite part of the build process. You'll get better as you do it more, looking back at my first soldering attempts, they worked, but were not clean. Haha

Awesome man! Thanks and will do! Could be a cool livestream for my new podcast! An Idiot Wiring Pickups for the First Time!

Have a look at the obsidian wired boards for les paul. Amazing quality parts, the wireless connectors are a doddle and they’re a good upgrade (depending on the model of Les Paul).

I need to learn too. Plus, right now, our local techs aren't taking in anything!

I need to swap out the JB in my Jackson for a Custom.

You are in Tampa still, right? I am an hour north. Hit me up if you want to learn.

Yeah, I'm in Plant City. I usually take my guitars to Guitar Repair Of Tampa Bay, but last I read, they weren't taking in anything.

PM me if you ever are my way if you want.

Edit: I will do it for a case of shitty beer.

Dude me and buddies have been contemplating the same thing during this quarantine... I mean after 30+ years of playing I feel like I should really learn how to solder my own pickups etc. Was looking at the same wiring kits as well. I actually just fixed my Randall cab jack an hour ago. Desoldered an old neutrik jack and replaced the busted one. Everything works and I didn't fuk anything up

I started playing at 12 (2002) and at 14 I was making decent money working on kids guitars. At least good money for a 14 year old kid. Lol. I think I bought my MIM Fat Strat used for money I made off of friends work. Lol

Watch a couple of videos for tips from the pro's on how to solder and you'll be changing out pick ups weekly. It's super simple, and yes, you only have fear of the unknown. Start out on a beater guitar or an old radio to get the hang of it. It will be an eye opener.

I just refinished and rewired this guitar, the refinishing, sand off the old finish, stain and sand, clear coat & paint took about an hour and the rewire about an hour. The longest part was waiting the 4 hours for the black paint on the back of the guitar to dry and researching wiring.

Damn man! That looks great. Unfortunately I don’t have any beater guitars so I’ll have to just “go for it”!

Looks like a solid kit to me. Everything is preassembled and all u need to do is connect at the terminal block.. Easy..

DOIEET!

I agree with just learning to solder. It's pretty easy if you have a decent soldering iron. I started doing this as a teen to fix my own gear. It'll save you a bunch of a hassle and a bunch of money over time.
