What’s your favorite modded Marshall? Just starting to go down this dangerous rabbit hole. Got my hands on a monomyth modded vintage modern a little while back. The thing is a total fire breather. Just insanity.

Looking for the potential next purchase definitely leaning towards hellion…. But I do want to see what’s out there.

Ground zero stuff is great. The hellion is like a mark series with a Marshall. The Moab is like every cool modded Marshall noise in one. A lot of tweaks

The Monomyth I had was very thick and chaotic and it breathed fire but wasn’t great for hyper clear note definition.

Which mono did you have? Really digging this one.

It was a bit ago but it was a Marshall 1987x with a black sun mod. It was a cool amp for sure. Sounded huge and a big wall of aggression and cool. Definitely does not sound like a traditional modded marshall (kind of like how the Hermanssons don't really sound like a marshall as much either). The MOAB retains that marshall DNA more and can go from very raw and open to super modern and compressed. I've owned a lot of modded marshalls but my favorites were the GZ and the Hermansson followed by the Gower/Fortin stuff

what did you think of the Monomyth for heavy chugs? I feel like I have clarity and tightness covered with my Hermansson and that and more covered with my Hellion. I kinda want something Marshally that’s a little less on the tight side and more on the heavy/punch for the other end of the spectrum.

That sounds amazing for brutal stuff. Great work with the recording as well.

And agreed with above. Hermansson and ground zero have been my favourite by far.

I had 2 Monomyth modded Marshall’s and tried the skeleton key v2 amp. As far as modded Marshall’s go I liked them maybe next best to the Cameron’s and Langner I had, but I found them to sound for my taste distant compared to their stock counterparts boosted and vs some of my other amps. These modded Marshall’s tend to IME suck out a lot of the stock Marshall’s midrange character. Like Itsgoodnow said, there was something a bit chaotic or messy sounding I found in their character, but I liked their tightness, aggression and sizzle

Thanks man! I do have a hermansson modded recto. I’m told that and the Marshall are fairly similar flavor wise. Need to try a GZ and gower!

For tightness Hermansson’s are kind of in their own league lol. For heavier sounding chugs rather super tight, I’d say maybe some of the Cameron modded Marshall’s I’ve played, but really if that’s what I wanted I wouldn’t choose any modded Marshall’s I’ve tried and instead just go with amps like my Megalith Beta, 1st Version Uberschall, ‘90’s Blueface VH4 or Hell Razor KT150. The 2 Monomyth modded Marshall’s I had and skeleton key had more of the tight type chugs rather than heavy/punch and imo think the Hermansson’s are better at doing tight, clear chugs

where am I supposed to find a Blue face or a 1st edition Uberschall Sam? Lol

I honestly like my monomyth more than my hermansson, but different strokes for different folks!

I can see that, but you may feel differently with his 5GS Marshall’s or a Herm Dual or Triple Rec (I have a single, dual and triple Herm now) or you may still prefer the Monomyth, different strokes like you said. In some ways the Monomyth’s to me were kinda like a middle ground of the Cameron mods and Hermansson’s I’ve had

I did play a dual, never a triple though; I did like the single better because of the tightness controls. I know he says his preferred mods are the singles and two channel duals for the tightness control he puts on them. I’m sure ease of mod has something to do with it too.

I could totally see the mono being middle ground to those. I can definitely get that high mid thrash sound, and something more guttural too which I’m really digging. Of course that may change in another week lol.

I've had a ton of modded Marshalls:
  • Cameron Ocean Mod SLP
  • Cameron Atomica Mod SLP
  • David Bray Plexi Rework I
  • BFG Cantrell Modded 800
  • Lee Jackson Modded 800
  • Hermansson 3-Stage JMP
  • Hopkins Pandora 50w
  • Gower KK++ JCM 800
  • Gower Rockmonster 1959SLP
The only one I've kept is my 1990 Friedman-modded 1987 "4-Hole" JCM 800. It came with a "Kitchen Sink" mod but I had Dave put a couple of other options on it too: bright switches, negative feedback switch, JBE Thump value, etc. It's 2.5 channels (Clean/BE/HBE) with masters for each channel, and it's all footswitchable.

The OG Marshall iron and the bright switch options make it sound like a gnarly old Marshall if you want it to, or it can sound like a super-saturated, ultra modern Marshall. It sounds good with every cab I've ever paired it with. It's impossible to make it sound bad. In fact, of all the amps I've brought to practice, my bandmates all agreed this was the best sounding one, beating out amps by: Benson, Carstens, Mesa, and Bogner. It's just quite simply the best modded Marshall I've ever played.

Very cool amp man. I was real curious about the carstens empire actually but that seemed to go quick!

Actually, fun fact... (and I'm putting together a video on this) the VH4's from the early 2000's are total "secret weapons." They have the same or a very similar circuit to the old Blueface VH4's. Peter didn't start making changes to the VH4 until 2007, when he added a resistor to make the amp brighter with more gain. If you can find an early 2000's VH4, for the love of God, BUY IT. It's like getting a $20,000 Blueface VH4 for less than a quarter of the price. It's one of the best amps I've ever heard and sounds NOTHING like the new VH4's. (Yes, I have mic'd clips to prove this that I'm putting in my video :) ).

Interesting. All 5 of the Hermansson’s I’ve owned and 2 others I’ve played had tight knobs (my triple also has a push-pull tight to go further). I don’t think I’d like them as much without a tight knob

The Empire was a very cool amp, I actually really liked it. Very different from the Grace, much more straightforward, aggressive, and gainy. The only reason I sold it is because it was very close to a few of my other, more modern amps and so decided to let it go to make room for something new.

My 4-Stage Recto is a MW, so it doesn't have the tightness control separated (it's juiced into the gain knob) but I don't think it needs it.

I'm going to do a video on this too (eventually, sigh...) but IMO the secret to the Hermansson 3-Channel and MW is that you want to use the third channel for rhythm work and the second channel for lead work. I know this is counter-intuitive but give it a try. My third channel has a much wide range of tones available if you know how to work it. The gain knob has a much wider sweep on Channel 3 and the Raw/Vint/Modern switch does a lot more on that channel than on Channel 2. Channel 2 is just a wrecking ball. Brutally tight, with an insane amount of gain, but interestingly it sounds amazing for leads and cuts through a recording like a hot knife. Give it a try! You might be surprised.
