More money than brains... $10,000 Pickguards (where the tone is)

This is insane to me. I remember when I was looking for a Les Paul and most of the used ones came without a pickguard.. maybe this is why. I just like the look with a pickguard better:

Haha, yeah that was April fools. Click on the video at the bottom of the article to see the research, I mean the video of the laughing cartoon.
 
What happens if you get the pickguard wet, does it get harsher sounding?
