Mornin' gents. Hope you are all comfortable at home with friends, family, and loved ones - happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Now on to business. I think it's time to start thinking about my next amp. When I hear modded Marshalls it most accurately sounds like what I hear in my head when I think about what I want tone wise. So I'm kind of leaning towards a modded JMP or JCM800.

I couldn't find a comprehensive list of the most common Marshall mods but I've found bits and pieces about each mod. Does anyone know of or found a list of the common mods and a description of what they do? For example, a noob to the mod world (like me) needs to know what the difference is between the Kali and the Jose. Are those proprietary to specific people like Friedman's mods or are they somewhat generic now? Also, what's the difference between the Kali, the Jose, and the Brown Eye? If i've overlooked a thread, point me towards it please?

Help a brother out! Ready to start this project!

They are all basically variations of Jose mods. There are lots of talented people on this very forum that can mod you up.
I would suggest that you set yourself a budget that you want to spend, keeping in mind that some extra work might be required as in power supply caps and re-tube.
Get a list of what features you actually need. Then start contacting people who offer the type of mods that you are after. Then it comes down to who can work in your budget, your time frames and who you feel comfortable with.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sounds like a great idea to catalogue all of these modifications into a single thread.

Boss SD-1.

;) :)

I guess you mean that a lot of mods just try to emulate boosting the front end of a Marshall amp with a Boss SD-1 pedal?

I had an amp modded from BFG amplification and he did a great job. You can check him out on facebook. It was not very expensive and he was great to work with. Fast turn around time also. The boss SD-1 is a great place to start if you do not have the funds for modding. I have used one of these pedals for years and once I got the mods done I dont use it much any more. I wasnt for sure about getting mods done at first and you see all these cool video's of these amazing sounding amps that people put a lot of money into and they are great sounding. I just got a few basic mods done to change a few things to the amp I did not like. After all, you purchase an amp that you like for a reason but perhaps later on you want to build on that tone and make a few changes. I played through my amp for one year and took notes the entire time before I even sent it off for mods. This will help explain what you want done too your amp and get it closer to what you want. I was glad I modded my amp and didnt have any regrets. As far as mod names go, I really did not pay much attention. To this day I still do not know the name off the mods done to my amp. I just explained to him what I was hearing and wanted to change. I cared more about what was going on in my head and not what the guy next to me was sounding like. I did whatch a lot of videos and did a lot of home work on this. Every mod guy I talked with asked me the same questions. What don't you like about your amp? What do you want done? I know you will be happy with your mods if you know what you want when you pull the trigger. Take Care and good luck.

Dan Gower can do anything you want. He's super friendly and honest which is a big deal to me. Check him out!

Y'know, it'd be great to modify a Marshall where most of the capacitors and resistors were replaced with variable capacitors and variable resistors- then you could make it sound however you wanted. But you would be overloaded with controls though.

I would love this. ive thought about doing this to one of my amps more than one time!

it would be crazy, but, i've never been one to say "there's too many knobs" or "too many settings".

More like boosting after the input stage. Creates a different feel and sound than slamming the V1. I like a mix of both depending on playing style.

Mesa is famous for using the diode clipping stage inline with the gain pot. That's why around past noon on a mesa its starts to sound like a big muff pedal run beside it.

Marshall put them in different places over the years. The Jose Is post PI i think?
