most gain from preamp tubes?

what tubes is gunna give me the most gain i was told sovteks are very good. ive used groove tubes and they suck huge balls. i need to pump as much gain as possible. and has to be a 12ax7

I always felt like the Chinese tubes had the most gain, Ruby is a good choice the HG+ models.

I think that the jj 8803s are high gain but I hate the way they sound...

There's a high gain equivilent of the 12ax7, called the 12Au7 or 12At7, slips me.

Can I ask though why you want to get the most out of your amp? Not hating, just curious.

+1, except I beleive the JJ ECC83S is their highest gain preamp tube. They sound great in my JSX.

Yeah, the 803's are high gain too, just a bit less than the 83S's. But as you said, they do not jive with every amp.

I have performed a similar 'test' and came to the same conclusion here Tung Sol's rock, they don't sound great for clean tones though, too clear and snappy, great for straight gain tones though.

not in my amp. I had the tungsols in there also and found them lower gain and warmer/rounder than the ruby.they were what i have been using for a few years but have recently moved on
