I had these put in a Dean Soltero and I had the chance for the first time tonight to play them at gig volume. These took this pretty good sounding import to a guitar that would rival a lot of guitars for twice the price. I typically don't get that impressed anymore with gear but these pick ups are freaking great in this guitar. I mean, I am really floored and this is coming from someone who has tried a few booteek pick up builders. I will be trying more of the the MCP offerings fo sho.

How would you describe the tone of these? I hear Jerry Cantrell has these in his Rampages.

Ya this is my default PU from Wade. It just sound so clear but has the drive most of us need! Indeed it can take a $75 hamer Slammer of mine and make it sound unreal! Just like Electa's import Dean. Yes Jerry is using them as is Ty Tabor and me!

I am pretty impressed with my Afwayu in my LP studio, kind of reminds me of a JB with less mids and more bass. I think if I had to do it again though I would get a slightly lower output pickup for my guitar anyway.

I'm typically a Duncan JB guy but these are just more clear like Jeff Hilligan said. It just helps bring the growl out in the guitar. It made my other guitar with a JB kinda muddy sounding. It's not that the pups are brighter it goes through the whole tonal range as just very natural and clear with the perfect amount of hotness for me. Thats the best way I can put it.

I LOVE how the 2nd BB sounds in my LP! It sounds MASSIVE with a very clear, balanced and uncompressed tone. Which MCP would you go to in a H/S/S strat (alder/Braz RW)? I've got a Duncan EVH in there right now and while i like it, my LP just sounds bigger and better. I know that my strat will never sound quite as big as my LP, but I'd like to get it closer.

Should I go with another 2nd BB or an Afwayu?

I'm going with an Afwayu in the bridge of my strat. Jerry Cantrell is now using them in his G&L's.

take a listen to the XTC module I worked on to get Jerry tone. I used the AFwayu when I did it. Me thinks its jerry!

I have a Solution and it is the best pickup I have ever used for metal. It is in my LPC and just sounds awesome. The tightest bass response from a pup that I have ever heard.

I've not been through a ton of the small builders of pick ups. I did the Marshall Heads from Wolf Tone and a few others and they were cool but not much better than what I was getting with Duncans and DiMarzio's. I do feel though that Afwayu's do sound $40 better than the Duncan's I've been using.

For those that have played the 2nd degree blackbelts and the Afwayu's could you describe the differences?

I have a set in my McCarty. Like donbarzini said, it lacks a good bit of bite and is kinda compessed. But tonewise, its all there. Huge lowend. high output so its not the greatest for crystal cleans. Awesome pup for crunchy rock leads. I like the neck pup the best. Very hot and glassy. big lowend but not muddy. All in all when i put the Afwayu set in my PRS, the tone tripled in size.

I will say, the nickel plating on my set is terrible. looked like shit after the 2nd gig.

I ended up sending the Afwayu back, wasn't my thing at all. The thing about all these pickups, I tried several MCP's, none of them made my jaw drop after the swap like some of these reviews. They are definitely good but they don't leave others in the dust by any means.

I support Donbarzini's statement..... The only pup maker I like is WCR and wolfetone.

I support this as well. I was greatly underwhelmed by the Afwayu. In fact, I thought it sounded bad in both an alder superstrat and a LP. However, I LOVE the WCR Godwood

Different strokes...the WCR's that I have had (Shredder, Iron Man especially) and played (Godwoods) have been totally underwhelming.

Yep different strokes. I've never played any of the WCR stuff but I thought the MCP Afwayu knocked the JB's I have in the dirt and way way less compressed and more open. I really think it all depends you are looking for and how you define open vs compressed. For me I was really impressed the MCP's. But that's the cool thing about people liking different gear...makes the world much more fun place and gives us shit to argue about. :D

You may want to revisit the Godwoods.... I don't know how those would "underwhelm".

Are those on the hot side? I tend to like a hotter pick up than classic output but not over the top hot. BTW if they sound anything like the Wolftone Marshallheads I've had those and didn't like them.

In a les paul, the best pickup I have ever played is the WCR Godwood. In a custom, the Marshallhead A5 mag is killer, but in a regular standard or RI you need an A2 magnet for the marshallhead.

As for neck pickups, the WCR crossroads or Darkburst are killer. Different and killer. I don't dig the Marshallhead neck that much but its cool. You may want to call wolfe and see if he recommends another neck pup...
