Hey I am looking for a new set of pickups for my Les Paul. Musical style is hard rock in the Foo Fighters vein. I was ready to pull the trigger on a pair of 2nd Degree Black Belts but the Detroiters caught my interest. I am looking for a pickup that is not overly hot and over wound and that covers modern hard rock as well as maintain a classic tone. I am not a speed metal guitarist and can't stand super compressed hot EMG's etc. Any suggestions?

My amps are -

1. Diezel VH4
2. Marshall JCM800 2204 (Friedman Brown eye and HBE mod)
3. Mesa Triple Rectifier

Cabs -

1. Mills Afterburner (30 watt cel)
2. Diezel original grey faced RL cab (30 watt cel/custom 12" in x)

Don't know what you've run across in the threads, but here's what Jerry from Luxxtone had to say about the two in a post:

"The Detroiter is a little hotter, at around 9.2k. Has much more snarl to it, I always say it sounds like it has 10% P-90 in it. Drives the amp harder and sounds very pissed off. The 2nd Degrees have less push and a little more low end and low mids...very big and open sounding. Both have great clarity and openness and string separation, but the 2nd Degrees have a little more note separation. Both are lower output, but they'll drive your amp harder than you would think...but they are not high output pickups at all."

Man just dealt with this today all I can say is you need both.

You'd really have to try them both out, they are both cool. Jerry has a Detroiter in one of his guitars and it sounds unbelievable. I'm not kidding the pup is intense and balanced and fun to play.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Nick balanced pup with lots of clarity and less push, go with bbs. If you want something slightly more aggressive with a bit more snarl to it, go with the d.

Both myself and another Guitar player in my band use the detroiter in LPs and both sound amazing. The bbs are great, but we wanted something a little more pissed off.

+1.Either way your covered, the Detroiter has more edge but both can do what your looking for, call Wade if he's not to busy

Oh man...Now I have thrown the WCR Godhead into the mix. I need to decide soon. Ugh!

Tough decision to make man. Good luck with it. You have the amps with plenty of gain, so can't go wrong with any of your choices really.

I can't speak to the Detroiter or Godwood, but the 2nd Degree Black Belts in my VOS LP are fantastic. Cover just about anything and they do hard rock with ease.

I would love to try a set of Detroiters as well, but am so pleased with the BB's, that I just can't take 'em out.
