Hey gents,

I've very much used to the sound that my mahogany/maple top Les Paul gives me. I love the hugeness and the warm chunk it produces.

I'm always on an endless quest for my next shred axe and the Petrucci Musicman is looking like a good contender right now. The only negative of this axe, in my eyes, is the basswood body. I'm sure there are nice cuts of basswood out there, but can it give me a similar "big" sound as my Les Paul?

Maybe I'm just biased because my basswood Ibanez guitars have sounded way thin!

Basswood is not that thin, in fact it's a bit warmer/thicker than Alder.

However the JP will not give you Les Paul chunk, that you get from a LP only.

However, the pickups can take it a long way, and if you go for hard tail or classic style trem, there's loads of tone to be had from such a guitar. Check Joe Bonamassa's tone with one, it's big indeed.

Those guitars sound great but if the basswood is a concern, how about the BFR? Alder body, maple top, mahogany neck and mahogany tone block.

The BFR is out of my price range unfortunately...:-(

Perhaps the JP6 would pair well with a powerful pickup like a BKP Miracle Man?

best sounding axe i ever had was a '01-02 wolfgang with basswood body.

that guitar stomped ass all over my alder Jem.

i also own a basswood charvel ATM and they have always had sick awsome resonance tones.

Yeah, I wouldn't be particularly against basswood...I've just never experienced a good sounding basswood axe with my current setup. Plus, it would be my metal/shred axe, where a somewhat brighter tone is needed for detail.

Most basswood guitars that i like the tone of always had a maple top on them. Iv'e played some Petrucci's and thought they were ok. But I'd usually go with Basswood over Alder.
