HELP!!! I been offered a straight up trade opportunity for my Taylor 614CE. It's a '13 year model with the faux spiral inlays, natural maple back (2 piece bookmatched) and maple sides with a Sitka top. Had it for a few years. I always loved dark vintage looking acoustics with a darker tone, so at first, this guitar didn't peak my attention, but the sales rep at GC urged me to try it based on my playing preferences. When I finally decided to give it a go, I couldn't put the Taylor down, it felt like playing an nice Strat. I walked out with that guitar. I've always had a soft spot for cedar and now someone is proposing a trade, my guitar for his US Breedlove C-25R, western cedar top, Indian rosewood back and sides. Kinda liking it from the photos he sent me, and I always liked the design of Breedloves, but not sure about letting my Taylor go. Which is the better guitar, better investment, better deal? I don't play acoustic that much, so an investment/value is something I consider. I'm not emotionally attached to the Taylor, but I do like it a lot, and living in San Diego, it's nice to know Taylor is right in my backyard with the offices and factory being El Cajon... please share your thoughts!

I wouldn't do that trade. It seems like you'd regret it.

I do love it, I've just always been partial to darker, vintage looking guitars with a warmer sound. Not saying the 614 doesn't sound good, it sounds amazing, very bright and full, notes articulate very well and cut thru nicely, but I always liked the sound of acoustics with cedar tops and rosewood sides. They just seem to have a certain mojo to them. I could take my Taylor to church if I went to church, the Breedlove would fit nicely at Woodstock sitting around a group of people boozing and jamming lol. I know my descriptions and comparisons sound a little nutty, but kinda what I picture in my head with these two. I have done a few open mics and recorded with the Taylor. It plays great in a life setting, haven't really nailed the tone down in recording it. I've tried direct only thru my 610 preamp, but not miked. It came off a bit shrill in the recording, but maybe I just gotta work the EQ a bit. When I played live, I plugged into the board and man it came alive, so much to the point the sound guy really had to work to tame the tone, but playing on a small stage at a coffee house, I almost didn't need it amplified and really would've been well 'full acoustic'. It's a powerful guitar for sure

Nope, the Breedlove sells for $750 used on Ebay. The Taylor way more. You will be losing out. Do your homework...

Your model Taylor is selling for $2000 used. You would be giving it away. Breedlove no doubt great guitars but there resale sucks.

Well, that's why I'm posting here. I wanna get some advice before making a dumb move. I've been doing my homework here and there, but haven't been able to find anything on the Breedlove C-25R with the cedar top. I mean I saw it on the Breedlove site and new it goes for around 2400 which still doesn't add up to a new 614, that I do know. Thanks for the advice as well

Interesting. I'm a Breedlove fan through and through, and I bought mine in San Diego :) I'm no longer there, sadly.

I'd love to sing the praises of Breedlove here, but I can't in this situation. You're doubting it now, but it sounds like you love your Taylor. You'll miss it so much if you get rid of it, and will spend years searching for a similar guitar in disappointment. If you want a guitar in a different style, then save up, do some research and get a second acoustic down the line. The Taylor you've got is special to you, despite the doubt you've got at the moment. I'm having a similar problem with my Breedlove, due to the way in which I got it. The guitar itself is the nicest and most satisfying instrument I've ever played. I've got zero complaints about it, it inspires me to play and write while most other guitars frustrate me.

The direct-in tone on acoustic guitars is almost always disappointing without some signal massaging. Piezo pickups just don't sound natural on their own. There is some signal processing you can do to solve it. I've been putting a lot of work into improving my direct acoustic sound for recording and playing live, as I'm writing a record at the moment. I plug my Breedlove in direct and record at least an hour a day of improv guitar, playing around with the tone as well as pulling pieces out to re-learn and write with.

Here's a sample of what my direct tone sounds like right now. If you'd like to chat about my signal processing, all you gotta do is ask :)
