every clip i've heard of the Jan Ray pedal is either a boost to thicken a clean or bluesy tone a little, or a bit more cranked version of that tone. basically a cranked fender sound.

every time i start to feel a gas twinge for the jan ray i fire up my klamac arc furnace and know it can't get better than this pedal. i have the boost from this pedal always on, to buffer the end of my pedal chain and add fatness, but the OD side of the pedal is as close to SRV in a box as you can get.

they're no longer made so good luck finding one!

and for the plexi in a box pedal,

carl martin plexitone---the 2 channel with boost version that i fortunately scored with the vertex mod done to it. I had the original unmodded version side by side with the vertex and mason's mods really helpEd a killer pedal become an indispensable tool in my arsenal.

still getting the hang of this thing

the korg DL8000r delay is really sweet. it was between this, a 2290, and a roland sde-3000 and to me it sounded better than the roland and on par with the 2290. but 1 rack space and separate stereo controls.

the 1210 works very well with the gforce, and the pcm 80 is just huge beautiful reverbs, solid pitch shifting.

and the rocktron rack interface works really well! 1 in 5 out splitter, 8 stereo channel mixer, balanced XLR ours with cabinet emulation, ground lift switch, stereo vca volume circuit, rack wah circuit, headphone output, monitor mix input, midi and stereo audio throughs from front of unit to back of rack

all in a single rack space

it gets pretty crazy all the choices out there

good compressor
i love the tone press but would like to ab it with wampler ego and xotic comp

mild overdrive
arc furnace is it for me, but i could do with a maxon od820 and would still like to test drive jan ray just cause

rock crunch
plexitone is killer, but would love to hear atomic overdrive

dumble fusion leads
ethos overdrive rules the roost but zendrive II has some tastiness, holdsworth rockett pedal is also cool

Big fan of the TonePress, been using one ever since they came out.
Tried a gazillion other and never found one that I think is better.
Untill I got the Empress Comp, you should try it, the Empress is amazing!

my ground zero has always been the dynacomp---a good old one. so the tone press has the puffy feel but less noise and more top end clarity than the dyna to me

i had the menatone JAC which is also killer and maybe a bit more toneful but noisier

had the carl martin which in more like a rack comp--super clean and quiet but too sterile--good for acoustic

where does the empress sit?

I'd say all over the place in a good way.
It also has a mix-control like the TP but the comp-side is way more advanced.
It can do the studio-comp as well as the Dyna comp type.
Pedal-wise, it's probably the ultimate comp.
