My modern is do to come in in feb. But after talking to jason at pns in the burgh today he is going to sell it outright do to the fact that we found out that the set necks are now being made. I am going with all the specks from the first one but with a reverse headstock set neck instead of a reverse headstock bolt. The sad part is that it will 7 to 9 months till I see the guitar, but it should be worth the wait. Here are the specks.

1.Moder carve top
2. Basswood
3.1/4sawn maple set neck really dark indian rw/ reverse headstock
4.moder elliptical 780-830

7. bridge-gotoh floyd recessed
8. hardware-chrome
9.nut width-1.650
10.gears sperzel locking
11. pickguard-no pickguard-rear rout
12. electronics- volume,tone,5-way
13.input jack- side jack
14.knobs-chrome
15.pickups aldrich humbuckers
16.finish- faded trans whale blue burst, black back, scraped binding, color match neck (black) & gloss neck, match figured headstock.

I haven't had the pleasure, but from the guys who've tried both have reported not a lot of difference between the two. John does such a great job, the bolt-ons sustain for days. you sure its worth putting it off for the better part of a year?

Yeah I am cool with the wait no problem. I love set necks.

Wow you must be patient, I won't be able to wait another year. Not sure how big of a difference the set net makes, but the bolt on is really comfortable and the upper fret access is great as is. I have really small/short fingers and I can still access the upper frets lol. I have decided to just keep mine because I can't get myself to sell it anymore, was selling it at first since I needed cash to help pay for unexpected costs, but I found other ways to keep it, glad I didn't get rid of it :) The only thing I regret is going all mahogany, even with a thicker maple cap on my modern carve top I feel if I went with another tone wood it would cut much better and have more clarity. Amazingly the basswood ones sound and cut amazingly, was never really a fan of basswood guitars prior.

I do have a suhr standard and love it and I know the that the guitar coming next month will be great but I really would love to have one in a set neck plus jason is really cool with it.

SO CLASSY!

What about the fingerboard radius? You going with the standard 10" - 14" compound radius? And, you sure you'll be happy with the Aldrich pickups?

Sounds like almost the same specs as my standard. I really want to check out the set neck also. Just my opinion here but look into the Vulcanized necks he makes. they are stable as hell. I have had mine almost a year and it still has not moved. I dont know if they offer this option in a set neck but well worth it if they do.

I would really think long and hard about switching over... You might be shooting yourself in the foot... I always buy set in necks... And I've been looking into ordering a Modern.

At first I thought... Wow this is what I've been waiting for... But in talking to a lot of people who build guitars, and know. If a bolt neck on is done properly like Suhr does them... They can be better in a lot of ways...

It seems like A Set In will be a little Warmer, and more Focused, BUT

A Bolt On Will have more Bottom And Top, and Have more Chime, and be More Percussive, More Chunk!, and Open, and have more sustain...

It seems like the Glue can be an Insulator... Blocking Resonance from Neck To Body.

Really Think About It... You could be waiting 9 Months to get something you would be less happy with!

Best,

Roid RAGE

I would not wait so long for a guitar, specially if there is only a minor issue such as having a set neck or not... NO reverse headstock, those look weird and akward in such a beautiful guitar such as the Modern IMO

Thanks roid for thought's and input. When I ordered the guitar 5 months ago this subject was at the front of the whole process, but at that time they were not doing them except for certion models. So jason and I were keeping tabs and just watching to see what would happen. And I am a really big fan of set necks and I also like bolts as well, but I thought that it would make just that much more of difference than the standard I have now. It just seems like between the two guitars I could cover alot of ground .

Guys I really apprecieate all your thoughts and coments.

Thanks H&H

Whatever you get, I'm looking forward to getting together and trying it out someday.

sounds like you are really patient. I have always owned bolt guitars and prefer them over set necks but if you are willing to wait and are spending the money you should definitely get what you want. Just FYI, would not suprise me if the wait ended up being longer than 7-9 mo.
