Haven't been on here in a while. I somehow lost the gear bug for about 8 months, which was a Godsend, as I was able to unload a ton of necessary stuff without remorse. Haha!

Happened upon this Engl Retro Tube 100 w/ Vintage 412 cab for a great price and figured fuck it, why not?

Picked it up yesterday and jammed it at band practice. Nothing retro about this thing. Very tight, modern sounding but still pretty open for an Engl. Takes a boost great, unlike other Engl's I've tried or owned.

Cab weighs a metric shit-ton. Worse than a Mesa OS. Hard to judge it immediately as it is sitting on 2" harbor freight castors sucking all the ass out of the cab, but it sound nice and bright.

Will put some more time on it tonight.

Nice score! That’s a great Engl! Tight, but not too tight, with a real juicy tone. And no, there’s nothing “Retro” about it.

Always thought the clips of these sound amazing.....and also wondered by it was called the Retro Tube because most of the clips I've heard of them are insanely gained out (in a good way) :D

Talk to me, Goose. How do you compare that Egnl to your JJ100 and Splawns. Need deets, amigo! Congrats on the score, brother.

I had a Retro.. Impressive amp, for sure. The Artist is very much voiced like the Retro, but punchier.

Like the Artist, it has more attitude and juicier than a Splawn. Raw, and upfront. More sizzle.

Wait.... You had a Retro before, right??

No sir, I had a Powerball I. Couldn't sell that one fast enough.

Not even in the same camp. The Retro is a modern amp. It's just a little more open and dry, nowhere near the saturation of the Powerball. I'd say it's more akin to a 5150 III than anything Marshall based. When played in stereo with the Bogner Eclipse, it seemed to add some more modern sounding highs and upper mids, where as the Bogner was very much in the Marshall territory.

I didn't get a chance to play it last night, but tonight I'm going to put it up against my 5150s and Diezel Herbert to see how it fares and compares.
