Never played with booster/OD pedals before, but picked up an SD-1 today. All I can say is

can't beat that combo - Tubescreamers are pretty fun with those amps too

Maxon OD9 Pro+ came in today. Not what I was expecting. I preferred it on the 9v setting in the "boost mode" rather than the 18v setting in the "normal" mode (which is more full range). Guess I prefer having the mid hump.

Not sure which I prefer, the Maxon or the SD-1. Both have plenty of gain, let pinch harmonics scream out and provide basically endless sustain. OD9 is a thicker sound, definitely lets more bass through. But the SD-1 has a grind to it that the smoother Maxon doesn't have.

You can always find something "better" than the SD-1 but it always just works with that circuit. A little much bass suck at times but in a mix, it works well. When you think that many of your fave albums were cut with a JMP or 2204 plus a screamer or SD-1, it is hard to ignore. I like the bad monkey with mine, try that one too! The nice thing about the SD-1 however , is the gain. It gets you there perfectly with the gain about 1/4 or a bit more up. ZW-44 is decent too but i've fallen a bit out of love with it recently. MXR adds it's own type of color to the sound. I find each company has their own thing going on. Xotic for example is a good company with great products but i just don't like what they do to my tone.

Cool. Is the Bad Monkey derivative of a Tube Screamer or some other pedal? I'll try to give it a shot, too. There's a Keeley modded BD-2 nearby that I'm tempted to check out, too, but I really don't want to become an OD junky...

I've only had the chance to tinker with either the SD-1 or the OD9+ with the combo speaker. I suspect that the SD-1 won't be lacking bass when I have the chance to use a larger, closed-back cab with it and that the OD9+ will just sound like a monster.

It isn't the cab that really makes the difference. The SD-1 cuts a bit of bass to make way for the mids and highs like a tubescreamer would. The way you had your presence and treble dialed in though, that won't be a problem for you. The bad monkey is a tubescreamer type pedal yes, but you have control over a high and low knob so makes it easier to dial in more or less of what you like. I also feel it is fairly clean in terms of the grit or raspiness it imparts on the tone. When the gain goes up, the compression does. So you feel like you get more compression vs grit.

Just put mine through the paces for 40 min with the master at just under 4. Loud as hell. I'd say just stick with the SD-1. I ran through my Od's again including the monkey and at loud volume, the SD-1 just gives you that extra oomph for the 80's tones. Just roll with that and save some $!

Besides light-medium overdrives, maybe also check out clean boosts, especially ones that can get the guitar signal way up there. The Zvex SHO really makes MV Marshalls sing.

Also, the model #1933 matching extension cab can help add body and thump. A few samples from the interweb...

Would love to have a 1933 cab, but I went for broke and I picked up an '81 Marshall 4x12 with the 65 watters instead. Plenty of body and thump added there!

I hear you on the clean boost. I just bought a CAE Boost/Line Driver for just this purpose (love how the CAE Wah hits the front of the amp, so wanted to get just the booster). Unfortunately I haven't actually tried it with the 4010 because I got side tracked by using the booster on a Triple Recto...
