New amp day.. Morris XSIII

This is an amazing amp. Goes from beautiful clean to monster high gain and everything in between. Punchy as hell, tight and tons of clarity.

Different beast than my Splawn Nitro.

Cheers đŸ€˜đŸ»

sick man, congrats! That Nitro is sick as well! What mods were done to that, and how is the Morris different? I'm familiar with the Nitro, but it didn't have mods like that!

Thanks Erock. The Nitro is more modern sounding, while the Morris (at this this model) is more older hot rodded marshally sounding. Both sound big when cranked, both sit well in the mix in a band.

As far as the Nitro mods, I posted about is in this post.. check it out:

The only mod I hadnt posted (i dont recall why) in that thread was the "Low end Reducation". I had the amp tech put a toggle switch that reduces the amount of low end but filtering out those boomy lows that you get in certain settings or cabs. It allows the Bass control to be turned up a tad bit more for better body definition. Flick the switch back and it brings it back to factory.

Cheers

wow, that killer man. I can see how the mid mod and reduction mod would really help that amp if you weren't boosting. That's awesome man, has Scott considered adding them? He was pretty flexible when I ordered my QR years ago.

Oh, and I can see how the Morris would make a nice addition as well.

Nice amp! I have an XSIII as well but never really had much time to bond with it. One day I'll break it out again and give it another shot.

Kind of a finicky amp. Run the “Crunch” up until you get the gain you want. Then turn up “Drive” until it fills out. Too much Drive and it can get soft/compressed sounding. Took me a long time to figure that out.

What do you think of the Sirrum in comparison to the XSiii?
Totally different. The SIRROM is a high gain beast. Way more gain (all usable with trim pot) and much tighter. More low end and high mid emphasis.

I believe the XSIII has some Hiwatt in it. It has a kind of dry sound that reminds me of VHT/Fryette on many settings. But that can be changed with the dual gains.

@EyesOfTheSouth! What tubes configuration do you use in your Morris amps?

I put a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in the PI and it opened up the amp nicely.

An EH7025 will open it up even more. All my Morris amps now have the EH7025 in the PI. I also use it in V1 of the XSIII and UK 78’. The SIRROM’s sound best with JJ’s in the gain stages.

Interesting! Might have to give it a try.

JJs in the power tubes ?

I have TAD red base EL34 in the UK78’ and EH EL34 in the XSIII. The JJ EL34II are fantastic in the XSIII, but I toasted one and just threw in what I had on hand. The SiRROM’s have the JJ 6550’s.

Be sure to give a review. I’m on fence between 67’ and 68’ for my next one.
Absolutely! I was in Glen’s shop back in March and played my Sirrom, the 67, 68 and the 68 Brownout. I don’t know that there is a “wrong answer”. I basically picked the 68 because it had all the same shit as the 67, plus the texture switch and “brown” switch.

I figured if I got the 67 I’d always be like “what I am missing without those switches?”

Are you located fairly near Glen’s area?
