Hey Guys,

I have been looking for a killer modded Marshall High Gain amp. I bought a Marshall 1987X Splawn Mod last week and while it is cool it is not quite what I am looking for.

I was going to try a 2001 Marshall 1987x Cameron Aldrich mod which I have a line on and then I stumbled into this cool purple plexi amp from the Hollywood GC.

marshallbarney.jpg

They say it is from a limited edition of 30 Marshall Super Lead 100 1959 SLP amps made in purple (#4 of #30 they say). I am thinking it might be the top half to the Hendrix Limited Edition Tall Purple Stack they put out in 2004 with 100 units but not really sure.

Anyway I bought it and it is currently sweating out the California 35 day wait period on used gear.

Anyway after doing some research on Marshalls and cool mods, Dave Friedman and Roy Blankenship's name kept popping up. After listing to a ton of clips I have decided a Variplex Head and a High Gain modded plexi would be cool and satisfy my Marshall Jones. The Variplex is easy enough to just order but I need to decide on which mod for this "Barney" amp.

I am dying to hear the Dave Friedman (Racksystems in LA) "Angry Hippie", "Brown Eye" and "Custom 45" mod's as I am told they all sound great and Dave is awesome to work with. I am leaning towards the Angry Hippie from what I have read.

Sent him a PM and awaiting the reply. I will post up when I decide what mod and then post up some samples when done.

Lots of fun!

I think Purple Plexi's look awesome

There is a Blankenship Custom 45 for sale on TGP right now as well if you were looking for one. From the clips on TGP seems like a nice amp to have. I have a Variplex and am really liking it right now so I can't justify picking up any new gear since I was able to finally get it sounding good with a UA so volume isn't that big of a issue for me anymore even though its a NMV amp.

I don't think you can go wrong with either mod. I think someone had brought a Angry Hippie during our So Cal Amp Fest at Tone Merchants during the summer, I think Darren (dstroud) played it so you can ask him about it. I think Bray modded marshalls sound nice as well so look into those too.

Try martin golub at LA SOUND DESIGN..

awesome sounding mods...doug aldrich uses him and so do tesla...plus a few others...listen to the dio dvd (evil or divine)..im pretty sure thats martins work..

:scared: Are you deaf yet? I hate being at work!

Nice score man! The Angry Hippie/Custome 45/Brown Eye each do different things - I'm sure one of them would be what you're looking for. I'd just give Dave or Roy a call, tell them what you want, and they'll fix you up!

From all I have read and been told, I think the Angry Hippie will be for me. John Ou on Huge Racks has one and is posting up a clip soon to hear. Waiting to hear from Dave.

whats a 35 day Cali used gear waiting game?

when stores take in used gear, some towns make the stores hold the gear for a certain amount of time before selling it. often called a police hold, the time is in case the gear is stolen maybe the rightfull owner could get it back.

Denver for instance goes by county. 30 days for one of them, 14 in another.

I heard the Angrie Hippie at the So. CA. jam we had. It sounded great. This is a high gain amp. The Custom 45 from what I understand, is a modded variplex. The Brown Eye mod has the least of gain. There is a posting on HRI and Friedman gives a brief explanation on the Brown Eye Tone wise.

yeah, dave friedman describes the "Brown Eye" mod as having that "stringy, thick VH1 brown plexi tone"...

Just had Dave Friedman do the Brown Eye on my 71' 100 Super Tremolo

:aww:

Its your amp and all but what a waste of an old clean supertrem. :(

Yeah I figured some people would feel that way and that's cool but for me I bought the amp off eBay to mod. I have no affection toward old Marshall's really and the stock sound's not my thing. The amp sounds 100 times better to my ears now and is more useful in my studio for the music I produce but I feel ya man.
