Just got a 2011 Rickenbacker 4003. Looks like the previous owner didn't play it, it still had factory stickers and there is no visible wear.

I have had a 4001 as my main bass for over 20 years. The 4003 has a slightly smaller body with a wider neck. It has a switch for modern and vintage wiring (adds a capacitor to which the older 4001s had) so it can sound virtually identical to my 4001. Modern mode has deeper lows.

Here it is along with my 4003.

God I love Ricks! Had a 4001 back in '82. Wow,mindwarp.

Man I love Ricky's. The giant ringing piano tone. The tone is so musical.
I'll never understand why more bass players don't use them. They make a rock band sound incredible.
My buddy uses one, I've considered stealing it from him and making my bass player use it.
Congrats man.

Dang they both look sexay! I've always said my benchmark bass tone is Chris Squire on Fragile. I think I read it was a Ric into a Marshall 100W head.

That's what Lemmy used.
Yep. And upon further reading, Squire split his signal to the Marshall and 'a bass amp'. The Marshall just put the growl on top of a solid bottom (which the Marshall wouldn't have at that volume).

I'm a fan of Chris Squire, saw him about 5 times in concert. The last time was just a couple years before his death.

Many Rickenbackers have a Ric-o-sound jack. Essentially, this is stereo jack which sends each pickup to a different side. I believe Chris used this to send the bridge signal to distortion/effects and left the neck pickup separate to provide the low end. I don't use it much since I tend to play bass with no effects and you really need two amps (or two separate channels) to make it work.

I'm very much a prog nerd, so I'll often use my bass along with a set of MIDI bass pedals and a Moog Voyager analog synth. :D
