I haven't messed with extended scale/range guitars in a while (used to have 2 x 7 strings back in early 2000's, Ibanez 7620 & Custom Carvin Koa 727). So with all the great vids on youtube I thought it might be cool to try an 8 string. Got the new White RG2228 with maple neck. Did I get in over my head? Going to plug it in tonight and see how it sounds.

pics or it didn't happen.....all I can say is I can barely control 6; you are far more a man than I for attempting 8. HNGD man, and good luck!

here's a couple

oh and I don't plan on just chugging on the freaking low string, that's just gay. on the flip side - I am no Tosin Abasi. Then again who the hell knows what I'll do with 2 extra strings...

I'm holding out for the 10 string.
Bob - they had a Proto 9 string...at that point I may just pick up a Uke.

Kay, that's just badass looking.....nice one dude.

And I totally WOULD use it just for chugging on the low string....that's why I haven't bought one yet lol.

Yeah, if 10 strings was a requirement I'd just switch to sax or piano.

I feel your pain. I am daunted by the notion of a 7 string. I seriously think the "extra string thing" is fashion more than form. Considering that really - truly - only an incredibly small number of guitarists in amongst the entire galaxy of guitarists can truly, fully utilize all 8 or even 7 strings, what business have I in getting a 7 when I'm a hack? This is just me. I am in line for a 7 string. I can justify it as simply that "extra bass" string I may use for the djenty shit. I can't fathom moving on to 8 or even the latest 9.

Tosin is a genius and borderline guitar-god.

I am not.

But regardless - spend some time with it and do what you can. Don't give up. Just lock all your other instruments away and force yourself to only play this new fiddle. Seriously. But outside of the inherent challenges - congrats!! :D

First off, the RG2228 sounded massive running into the Cameron Atomica. If that tone came from 6 strings with drop tune, look out. But man the 2 extra strings leave me thinking how to incorporate it into my playing.

So...the rep I have at Sweetwater is willing to let me swap out on amp or guitar. I'm leaning towards an amp.

Dual Rec Head or Lonestar 6L6 2x12

Just take off the two low strings and put stickers on the fingerboard where the strings used to be. You'll be the ultimate trend setter.

Now you're thinking! Just imagine how dialed in your string skipping technique would be.
