Let's talk neck pickups & clean sound a little bit.

This is what I've tried so far: SD SH1, SH2, Burstbucker 1, 490R, Classic 57, EMG85, EMG81. All Les Paul.

I like the 490R the best, it actually smokes IMO.

Tell me about your experience with neck pickups & guitars you had them in?

We must have total opposite ears...

What's your ideal neck pickup tone? Describe it if you can.

I can't believe that you like the 490R better than the Duncan 59. The 59 is much more open and articulate... the 490R to me, sounds like mud mud mud, especially when paired with the 498T.

But that's just my opinion. If it works for you, then that's cool!

It's funny, because 498T is my favorite bridge pickup   Yea, I like the 490R miles better than 59r, at least in a Les Paul.

Ideal tone? Can't think of anything recorded honestly. 490R with Diezel Herbert, 101B, Fender Princeton or Tweed is the best I've heard so far. I should probably mention that I don't like the modern "ping-pong" bright clean tones.

The 490 in my Gibson Explorer sounds great. IMHO it smokes the 59.

I'm with nick on this,I really couldn't stand the 490,57 or the burstbuckers/pros.I did love the Steve Morse neck and the Air Norton in either LPs or SGs,the Steve Morse neck sounded Great in a Flying V I just sold. The Neck pickups from Wade at MCP have really takin me by surprise and sound incredible,in the right application of course!!!

See, I love my neck pickup to have a good treble bite to it.

What many people consider a smoky, smooth, fat neck pickup tone, I consider to be mud. So everyone's ears are different.

My two favorite Duncans are the Jazz or Pearly Gates. The Jazz is a bit smoother and rounder, the PG "rougher" with a bit more bite.

I'm also a big fan of the Anderson H1, especially when paired with an H2+ in the bridge.

I love the 490R in my LP studio, so rich and chimey. I don't find it muddy at all. I am actually thinking of picking up another 490R for my LP custom.

I do have a SD jazz in black if you want to trade for your 490R, we could just do a temporary swap too...

So far my favorite of all time is the Anderson H1, though I do have a soft spot for the Duncan '59. I fear the H1 would be too dark in a Paul, though. I'm running mine in an all mahogany maple top G&L Legacy. Fat, woody and articulate :)

Freakin' awesome split, too. Sounds more like a single coil than some single coils

i like the diMarzio air classic neck. more open and articulate than a duncan 59. great clean and OD solo tones.
