Ok so this is going to be one of those annoying "recommendation" posts
So I'm still searching for my perfect tone and am currently using a Friedman JJ100. I absolutely love the amp for rhythm but not so much for leads. I feel like it lacks the compression and fatness that I prefer for solos. I always feel like I'm fighting for every note. I've owned KSR's and ENGL's in the past and thought that they were amazing for soloing but kind of were missing that "cut" for riffs.
I should mention that I play in a cover band doing hard rock/old school metal covers.
Is there an amp that has that modded Marshall cut but is also fat and liquidy for solos? Maybe a multi channel amp would help achieve this?
I'm thinking Wizard MCII, Diezel VH4, Soldano SLO, but I'm open to all suggestions!
Thanks in advance

The Mark IIC+ has arguably the best lead tone I've had; although the SLO is great too and will have that cut for rhythm work in spades. The C+ needs a boost in the upper mids for better Rhythm cut. A Wizard MC will work great as well for both; the MTL will be a bit scooped out of the gate.
In a perfect world you'd pick up a C+ and run 2 amps; C+ for leads and the Friedman for the Rhythm.

Interesting! I had a Mark V in the past but never got it properly dialed in. Could have been the cab I was using at the time though. I know Mesa amps love Mesa cabs

Assuming you already using one, have you tried some sort of od, boost, and/or compressor?

I use a Tone Freaks Naked OD with the JJ and really like what it adds. I've tried a few compressor pedals but never really got what I wanted from them

delay would help too if you arent using one

Oh yeah, I'm definitely a delay addict lol. Currently using a Strymon DIG

You might not get what your after in regard to lead tones from the MCII unless your hitting it with pedals. No liquid compressed tones from that amp. Rhythm tones are cutting and crushing.

Yeah that was kind of my concerns with Wizards. I know the rhythm tones slay but I have a feeling that it will be similar to my JJ for leads

Have you tried an od or clean boost? I believe jerry still throws on a hand wired tubescreamer for solos.

Yeah I use a Naked OD pedal for solos. Sounds great but it's a very subtle overdrive, maybe I should try something a bit hotter

Yes, Diezel VH4 is exactly this =)

Neck pickup and Klon KTR or other Klon clone for boost. KTR gives that solo fatness (almost Bogner-ish feel under fingers) You looking for with Friedman amp.
As amp itself I will look at SLO or italian variant Mezzabarba MZero overdrive. I heard MZero live with Vinne Moore playing on and it was maybe best live tone I ever heard.

EDIT : Check out for Eric Steckel videos on FB or YT.

Do you have the JBE/MV mod so you can toggle between Ch.2 and Ch.2-JBE without volume loss?
What cab are you running?
As a former JJ100 owner - I can't see this amp not getting you want you need. I'm not here to rain on anyone's parade - but that amp is capable. Period.

So, cab intel; how are the tubes in the amp, signal chain? Give us more deets - the path of running down the rabbit-hole looking for other amps is pricey and time-consuming and can be absultely fucking frustrating. Only to oft at times end up right where ya started.

Guitars used. FX, etc. Everything needs to be taken into account. 2nd guitarist in the band?? And if so, what's their rig. Volume levels? Let us know.
Peace

How many channels do you want? Do you need a good clean channel?

Ever tried an Engl Savage?
It will do awesome rhythm tones, in that pissed off Marshall vein, but more refined. Tight AF, takes boosts well, insane gain on tap and properly saturated, without becoming clinically compressed (like the Powerball IMHO).
For leads it does great too, but you may want to use some additional pedals to get more into that liquidy Mark IV tone.
