The JB with an A2 mag is real, real close to the DiMartini pup.

(a few more expensive pickups like the Tom Holmes and Vic's Mojave pickup, which are unnecessary to spend the money on...)

Honestly though, the best pickup I've found for the EVH tone with a cranked Plexi style amp is the EVH Humbucker. It is a bit higher output, but you don't need a boost to get EVH legato on a 12000...

Higher gain amps, I like the others I mentioned...

There is something about the 59, to me it is missing something. I forgot about Trace's pup, thanks!

Steve, I need the EMG 36v mod to do anything legato on a 12xxx.................................

Absolutely...also MCP Blisterbucker (I think he's changed the name now)...WCR Darkburst is outstanding as well. Bareknuckle VHII (really pricey)...Ibanez Super Distortion is what RalleP over at Metro uses currently, though he used to use a JB and it sounded fantastic.

I'm with the OP, don't like high output passive pups. They always emphasize one particular boosted frequency in the midrange that is impossible to dial out. Its somewhat like a boost pedal with a strong character that you either like or don't. It always sounds that way.

A lower output pup is usually more open in the mids, & lets complex chords through much better. And if you occasionally want a boost, you can choose your voicing through careful pedal selection. So a lower output pup, through a high gain amp that doesn't need a boost is my ticket to high gain heaven.

Though I still like EMGs as well, as they feature a very weak wind (polar opposite to a high output passive) that is then boosted electronically.

Man listening to all kinds of boots of Ed back in the early 80s, Secrets from maybe the US fest was a sonic explosion  :inlove: :cheers2:  :worship:

HO pup spam coming soon...................

another one that fly's under the radar is the Dimarzio Virtual Hot PAF

It depends, if you are looking at the van halen 1 sound(first album),Eds destroyer guitar,Ed used a creme colored 70s Mighty Mite distortion pickup, looks like a dimarzio super distortion but its not,for Eds white and black strat a overwound PAF,thats the paf Ed took to seymour duncan to wind for him(Duncan custom custom in my opinion),Eds white gibson les paul custom that he took on the 78 tour had a creme colored dimarzio super distortion. The first album sound is aggressive sounding anyway there you go.

are you going to be using a vox amp for the evh sound? :)
