I've always plugged directly into a mixer or whatnot...and that's what it always sounds like. I'd like a simple, inexpensive (used) unit with a nice, fat sound. I don't need a lot of options (no modelers). Something that I can dial in easily and forget about.

Any suggestions?

I had a Sansamp RBI that I bought from Thump which is a great preamp but in my experience I'm not getting the goods from bass unless I'm micing a cab.

I also use a Sansamp RBI that I'm pretty happy with. Having an active EQ on the bass doesn't hurt either.

Thanks for the suggestions, fellas.

Olaf, my first inclination is always to see if I can build it first. But with all the used gear out there, I thought there might be something cool out there and really cheap. I'll most likely build something anyway. ;)

Bob,

Did you use the RBI on this jam track?

My memory is a bit hazy...I just remember you posted it a long time ago and I laid a rhythm track over it. I hear you on the speaker thing, but for me, at this time, the less micing the better.

Randy, I have some questions for you later.

I don't recall for certain, however, it does sound like the RBI.

Nice job on the rhythm tracks.

Short of buying a bass head and cab...the Tech21 preamp is quite good. I've used the PSA-1 on a lot of stuff and it's sounds good to me.

I know you said no modelers, but you may want to check out the SVX plugin by IK multimedia. Its basically an Ampeg sim and I dig what I have heard from it. You can probably download a demo to check out.
Clip in this thread over at HC was done with it:

Jason,

I just remembered I have a Scholz Bass Rockman that I haven't used since I got the Sansamp. It actually sounds pretty good, has built in chorus and compression, but the little 1/8 output jacks were always a pain on those things. If you want it, it's yours. Just send me your address and I'll get it out to you.

Those old Rockman's are cool. I wish I still had mine just for old times sake.
