I have a 1981 Marshall 2204 that has been Modded. I was originally told the mod was done by Karl Sandoval, but I'm not so sure about that. I believe it may be actually a Lee Jackson Mod. I has a freq. selector, as well as a extra gain stage with 2 masters. Master 1 on the front, and Master 2 on the back with a Push/Pull Attenuator. Drake transformers, and running 6550 tubes. The Labeling looks to be in a Lee Jackson style and it looks like it may have had a Info/Name tag glued on the back as well at one time. It's is not a high Gain Mod though, It's more what was called a pedal mod. If anyone can tell me anything else about this Amp/Mod it would be great.
Thank You
Here are a few photos that may help in Identification.

Whoever did it knew what they were doing. Proper filtering added, correct shielded cable, and neatly built.

Nice amp.

Not neat IMO. There's shit gooped & running everywhere.

I would guess Jackson as he tended to hack up things. Preamp tube placement looks like his although he usually signed the chassis.

Have you seen some of the old bogner modified marshalls?

Seriously that amplifier is just fine. All cable runs are as short as possible and the important lines are all kept neatly tied away. Proper heat shrinking, long resistor leads have protection, and proper filtering was added for the extra tube. Whether or not it is gooped means nothing other than the fact it pisses people off when it comes time for repairs.

It's definitely Lee Jackson's mod, however it's hard to say if it was actually done by Lee or not. This is the mod he shows you how to do on his instructional DVD, so anyone could've actually done the work.

Yeah the Bogner Marshalls had extra boards and shit running eveywhere. I always thought of Reinhold as the mad scientist of mApz ...

The amp in question may or may not function well IDK.

Wish Dave would let me post guts of his work to my 78' KS JMP but im sworn to secrecy.

Friedmans mods from a tech aspect are pure sex to gawk at and hard to beat. :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove: :inlove:

Every amp has possibility for improvement as far as neatness is concerned but i have seen much much worse in terms of mods and functionality. I have seen some layouts where you question how it is even working to begin with. Just luck of the straw.

I am sure Dave keeps a clean house in his modifications no doubt

I thought Lee always signed his modifications? If that is the case it explains everything :)

Thanks guys I really appreciate it. I was originally told that it was modded by Karl Sandoval but after a little checking it looked so much like one Lee's I started really questioning it. I knew that You guys could ID it for me. I wish it was a bit Higher Gain than it is.
I traded a 2004 Caparison Dellinger for the Amp + $300 back about a year ago. Been wanting to add a Effects Loop been talking to Mike Lickliter about it just haven't been able to get around to getting it done.
Do Any of you have any Idea which Lee Mod this may have been, Since it not a really High Gain head, it does clean up pretty good, and works really good with my Keely SD-1. I've been seriously contemplating throwing my PQ-3 into it to see what I can get out of it. :D

This is the main 'high gain' mod that Lee offered. None of his amps or mods were particularly high gain IMO. His mods were more crunchy sounding rather than the saturated type of gain that most guys go for.

Hmmmmm......Very Interesting ....didn't know this was the DVD mod.....So who knows ??
I know the Freq control on it is VERY temperamental. And you can't get any real Gain out of it without a Boost.

Treat it like a stock one and boost the crap out of it with both the SD-1 and PQ-3, I bet it would sound great imo.

Anything worth doing is worth doing right

However you cant buy your amplifier on the guitarcenter used gear section for $500 either.

Custom jobs are a different story. I'd expect nothing less than perfection for anyone paying for a complete custom one off design top to bottom. Goes for anything software wise or hardware which you know of both very well :)

I'd say Larry's amps are another example of pristine perfection. But you're also paying for it.

I had a Lee Jackson modded '86 2204 that looked EXACTLY like this, down to the same color epoxy/resin on the inside. And it was signed and dated by Lee on the chassis. He used the same stickers also..you can get some decent gain by working with the 2nd master/attenuator feature but I needed an EQ pedal to tighten it up..kinda wish I would have kept it. Paid like 600 for it..
