Okay, there are so many knowledgeable people here that I thought I would seek out some expertise. Here's my situation:

Playing in a cover band (mostly 80's and 90's hard rock/metal with some occasional modern stuff like Godsmack and Rob Zombie thrown in) I have always enjoyed a rig with flexibility to cover a range of tones. For the last year my rig has been built around using an Eleven Rack running into an ART SLA-2 and out to a MESA 4X12 and most recently an Orange PPC212-C 2X12. I have been able to create patches (including effects) for the different tones that I wanted for the individual songs we play. I enjoyed the flexibility of what I call one stop shopping.....everything I need with one step on the midi controller. Now comes the change............................

I recently completed a much wanted overhaul of my '76 Marshall MKII 50-watt head. The amp was sent to Voodoo for modifications with what I consider outstanding results! I now have a ton of tonal flexibility in the amp (including and added effects loop) with the only negative being that it is still a single channel amp. What I would like/need is the ability to switch off to a clean channel (aside from rolling back the volume on the guitar) and also be able to push the amp into a modern metal tonal range all while keeping the amp's main settings geared toward the 80's sound.

For added flexibility, I tried the 11R in a 4-cable method and did not get the results I thought I would get. One of the problems seems to be that I would need to incorporate a line-level to instrument level conversion box in order to have the appropriate signal delivered to the Marshall. In the long run, it seems as though the 11R was never really intended for the 4-cable method of operation. An alternative option I considered was trying a GSP1101 as it seems to have been designed to operate in the 4-cable method if desired, giving me effects and the occasional amp model (clean) when needed. Yet another option I have considered is using a rack mount effects unit in the loop of the Marshall (obviously for all my effects) and using something like a Suhr Riot or Emma PisdiYAUwot out front to get into the modern metal sound when needed. 85% percent of the time I will use the Marshall and roll back the guitar volume for what I need, but I looking for some added flexibility (if possible) when needed. As a side note, I have always used multi-channel amps or the 11R so this is my first attempt at designing a simple, yet flexible rig around a single-channel amp.

Anyway, I know this is a long winded post but I think I covered the basics of what I am looking for. Any advice or recommendations from you guys on which direction to go would be greatly appreciated. I am particularly interested in any good or bad experiences with the GSP1101 in the 4-cable method, although I am certainly not decided on going this route.

Thanx fellas.

I was just looking at the Line 6 M13 user manual and it seems that some of the effects can be run in front of an amp while others can be run in the effects loop. Using the M13 might be the best answer/solution. Anyone currently doing this?

The M13 is a nice all around option for effects that can be run with the 4 cable method.

Would you consider A/B-ing with another amp? Maybe a Fender for cleans/modern sound with a pedal, and the Voodoo Marshall for everything in between. Hitting the Marshall with a distortion pedal wouldn't be ideal for modern tones IMO. Boosting it with an OD could help, but it's not going to change the characteristics of the Marshall. You're not gonna turn it into a Mesa, as I'm sure you know. Running something like the Suhr Riot with the clean amp would be better, as the pedal is the only source of gain. Would also give you a nice lush clean tone, and a nice portable rig for smaller shows and such. Fender with a pedalboard can be a fun rig to play/travel with.

Also, you could run an Axe-FX with your Voodoo in the 4 cable method for effects and amp modeling. The same concept as you planned with the Eleven Rack. This might be the best choice, but a little costly. Worth it though, for sure. Best amp models in the industry, and the effects are top notch. Could also double as a (even more) portable rig.

Thanx. I actually did consider another amp like a small fender just for cleans. As far as the M13 is concerned, have you heard of people using the 4CM with success? I have recently read about some noise issues with this method. Any info on the GSP1101 in the 4CM?

In a perfect world the Axe FX would be ideal but unfortunately my financial resources are limited.

I've run the M13 4CM and It worked fine. No hum...
+1
But I would go with a HD300-500 since it is all the same effects with a lot more options, like usb recording, attached exp pedal. Just turn off the amp sims and use the effects.

I had an M13 last year and my biggest complaint was the midi. I tried to rack mount the M13 on a pedal tray and pull up individual effects and last year this didnt work. The HD seems like the way to go now.

I do have some experience with the Line 6 stuff as I already own a Pod XT Live. For effects and convenience it works well but it cannot be connected in the 4CM. I have been thinking about the HD500. I would be a good option.
