I am considering switching back to a tube amp from my Fractal Audio AX8. I have a Friedman Small Box head and several cabs to choose from. I play in a cover band and need cleans to cover classic Fender and Vox tones for songs from The Pretenders, Fleetwood Mac, Earth Wind & Fire. We also play Judas Priest, Foreigner, AIC, etc...

The reason I switched to the AX8, I was not happy for one reason or another with the channel switching amps. I have owned several Boogie Mark series amps. Bogner Siva, etc. I love the Small Box, the cleans sounds I need are not there.

I have run the AX8 through FRFR speakers, Seymour Duncan Power Stage, and now a Fryette Power Station. The AX8 sounds good, but I am missing the Friedman.

I am looking for suggestions regarding purchasing a dedicated amp head or combo just for cleans. Something not heavy, but has that classic Fender/Vox sound. I would prefer to keep the cost below $400.

Should be able to find a Fender Hot Rod in that price range and it will cover the ground you need it to.

Why not use your ax8 and the Friedman? You could run the ax8 through the Friedman effects loop and model whatever clean amp you want. Just turn off power amp modeling in the ax8.

I will have to try that. The Friedman has EL34's in it, might sound good.
