Killer playing! I just can't help from being distracted by the compression of the track. It pumps in a very audible way.

Thanks for listening! Yeah, I get it, Im at the beginner end of the scale when it comes to mastering tracks so I'm grateful for any advice on how I can get my levels up without making the recording sound like a house mix.

Cheers!

I'm no expert to be sure, but one fundamental principle which you might have overlooked and one that won't cost you anything is to not use compression/limiting on the master bus only in one giant dose. Apply smaller amounts of compression/limiting earlier in the process on individual channels and subgroups. This will make it much easier for the master bus compressor/limiter to give you the results you're after without having to work so hard and potentially create unwanted side effects.

I think the music is absolutely awesome, everything from the guitars the vocals the drums, etc.. To be honest, and I don't mean this to be a slight in any way, the production didn't seem to be on the same level as the quality of music. Would love to hear this recorded/produced a bit more... "professionally" for lack of a better word. RIP It Up suffered from this too I felt - great great song though.

Again, don't mean to offend, I genuinely like track a lot, and will be checking out the rest of your stuff.

Go to the classifieds, there is a chap willing to mix your material for free if you send him a track or two. This would be good for you to compare what you have to what he has done and learn for future mixes. Like the others have said, the recording seems compression heavy and also bass heavy to my ear. It might be the room you were mixing in or just the tone you were after, but to me, it is almost as if the vocals stick out and everything else is cluttering the low and low/mids. I think there might need to be some space between the different instruments. Good tune though!

Thanks man! I might try and remaster it with this advice :)

I think it might be the room too, I could probably do with buying a better pair of earphones as well, and upgrading my computer. But hey, you do what you can, and then learn from that I guess. Thanks for listening!

The song is killer, nice guitar tones, no cookie monster vocals (thanks for that) You guys sound great. It does sound like the comp was on the master track and is reacting to the drums more than anything else, but is effecting everything there. You can fix that easily in the manner mentioned above. I would not mix down or try to master on headphones, I've never had good results with that.
Nice job on the song, great playing too.

Seems like it could be really good?

As mentioned that upload is so bad.

Ok Dudes! I remixed and remastered it, I think its a bit better, grateful for your comments!

Killer! The rhythm guitars sound phasey to me, like 2 mics were used and weren't properly aligned, though.

Thats way better!
Killer song man, I didint mean to nitpick your hard work, you guys have a great song there and it deserves a equally good mix ;)
We are in the same "doing our own songs" mode and have been for awhile. Its been all trial and error for us too, but we've learned a lot and there is a huge difference between what we do 3 years later and what we started with.
Anyway, good on 'ya
What did you do specifically?

Thanks man, feedback is really useful, and this thread has really helped. There's huge value in peer review.

I just dialed back the compressor a bit, my setting was not really sensible. Its a learning experience, and I guess you gotta put your stuff out there and just put on the Teflon jacket :)

Great tune!! Also i second the no cookie monster vocals
Thanks man!! I have "some" tolerance for the cookie monster, but its not very much. :)

Our influences are mostly anything pre-1995 ;)
