New cab day, need assistance

The Fryette D412 floor demo finally arrived and I am like a kid at Christmas. Every time I heard a truck go by I looked out my window to see if was my tone god messenger.

I love it, there are a few scuffs here and there on the bottom and sides. I'm sure I can clean those up. There were only 2 little nicks on the tolex (one on each side) as you will see if you look at the pics. But the cab looks solid!!!!

Anyway my drummer is not only the time keeper but also does my pups, and any other technical crap for me. He has wired cabs for us before but just as a percautionary measure I wanted some tips on wiring the cab up.

The speakers are 16 ohm. In the cab there are 2 sets of wires. One on each side. Each set has a black and a white for a total of 4 wires. I assume I can put the top 2 speakers in and hook those up no problem however, what about the other 2?

I figured there were 2 different options.

Option a: Run up and down vertically, meaning run each bottom speaker from the speaker above it.

Option b: Run the 3rd like above, but the 4th speaker running from the 3rd as if it were going in a circle.

What do you guys think? I dont know anything about series/parallel stuff
 
Hey brother,

Follow this guide and you should be good. You'll end up with a 16 ohm cab overall.

Congrats on the new cab. Those are great. I used them for a few years and are, by far, my favorite front loaded cabs.
 
did you get it figured out dude?

it is possible whomever had it before had it wired like 2 - 2x12 cabs, basically a stereo setup. what are the options on the jack plate?

My 4x12 cab has 4 wires total from the input jacks, in two sets. Left and right, stereo/mono. I have Four matching 16 ohm speakers in the cab.

I started the wiring with the Positive from the mono (right) side of the input jack like in the diagram. I left the stereo (left wires) unhooked and completed the loop with the Negative from the same mono side as when I started. Followed the diagram to the t only there was that other set of wires from the stereo side of the input jack left over.

I figured I wont be using stereo so It wouldn't matter if the wires were left unhooked. So I switched my amp to 16 ohms, cab to mono and nothing....I think I could just barely hear my tubes distorting when I played, it did not sound too good.......

So my drummer wired it his way and got it working. He said it should be 8 ohm, the cheap-o meter said 10. Switched amp back to 8 ohms and it works.

I would like to get back in the cab if there is a more proper way wiring,
 
Based on your last post I would say your cab has an input jack that may have some switching circuit to go from 16 ohms mono to 8 ohms stereo. Look up the cabinet at Fryette's website and get a wiring diagram. You can also google wiring up a cab and get a diagram. My guess is you will have to wire it up to be able to go mono/stereo or you will need a different input jack/plate.
 
There's no way that four 16 ohm speakers can result in an 8 ohm final load. You can do series / parallel, like the diagram above for a 16 ohm final load. You could do all speakers parallel (all four connected positive to positive and negative to negative for a 4 ohm final load, which is probably not going to make your amp happy. If you shoot a pic of how you have it wired, I can tell you how to sort it out.
 
You can't wire four 16 ohm speakers to be four ohms. It sounds like you are wiring your cab up to be stereo only. When I got my FB cab, it was wired like this. I had to redo all the wiring. I rewire peoples cabs for money though, so that makes me a professional, right?

When I do a cab, I always start from scratch. If you aren't going to use the cab in stereo, then take out all the components on the jack plate, put one jack in, and tape off all the other holes. The less air that moves in and out of your cabs, the tighter your cab will be. I use a Switchcraft jacks and put heat shrink tubung over the solder connections after I made them.

It's better to use a good fat speaker wire in your cab than anything else. I use oxygen free copper speaker wire in a 16g personally. The fatter and better the wire, the less capacitance you get in your signal chain. The less capatitance you have, the less wear you put on your tubes over time. Also, I never trust switches in cabs. There have been horror stories of switches arcing in cabs that have taken out heads in the process. If you aren't running stereo effects or 2 heads on one cab, just wire it mono.

From there, just find a series/parallel diagram online somewhere. Avatar Speakers and a whole bunch of other sites have diagrams you can use to copy. You take the positive to 2 speakers, either from the jack, or connect the 2 at the speakers. Then you wire the negatives from that to the positives of the other two speakers. Finally, you run both of the negatives back to the negative on the jack. Any way you do that would be right. Personally, I run the jack positive to one side, and then connect the positives on one side of the cab. Then, run the negatives from one side to the positives of the other. Then, I connect the neatives on the other side like I did the positives.

First off, what was the problem when you received the cab? What you NEED to do, is call or email Fryette amplification and have them send you a diagram of the way THEY wire it. Then, copy it so that it is wired like a STOCK cab WITH the stereo option. If you don't need the stereo option, just leave it in mono mode.

If you don't get it wired back up like stock, then you have a incorrectly wired cab that isn't worth as much as another stock deliverance cab, if you plan to sell it later on.
