I've been wanting to get my hands on one of these things for a while to poke around under the hood, so I pounced when one came up cheap locally. Of course afterwards I found the schematics online, but still nice to have the actual unit in-hand for interactive exploration and measurement. Plus, I now I can actually hear it. The unit's low-end exciter is Spinal Tap approved.

I grabbed one too. I haven’t messed with it though as I’m in the midst of effects loop work. I’m excited to see what it can do though.

Mmmm, thinking of integrating something similar into a tube amp? That basically why I grabbed it, side-chains and controlled harmonic generation have been ideas I want to explore more for a while.

Not quite, I wanted something to be able to test the frequency response of my own effects loop design that isnt time based. I dont have time to reverse engineer someone elses work, I'm quite busy with my own stuff. Plus these are so cheap the labor and design time isn't worth the effort IMO.

Ahh, I see. Any particular technical reason for that?
My effects loop has a clipping LED 😎

Effects loops are not supposed to clip. Ever. Literally no one else does this. Circuits already designed and has been since March. I’m just working on making certain things tunable for various B+.

Ooo... Will custom colors be an option? 😉

So with respect to choice of test effects, is it that time-based effects don't really add much to the signal level (a delay just repeats a signal later, for example), and you're looking for something that'll beef up the signal in non-trivial ways (e.g., not just boosting the volume) to see how the LED responds?

Yeah it’s not just the level it’s the transient response I’m looking for. This will help me dial things in.

I had the pedal version of this for many years. I think they are hard to find now.

I’m excited to see what it’s all about. I don’t think mine is in as good of condition as his is. If it’s not a total pile I do plan on recapping it completely as it’s all analog signal paths.

Damn...talk about a trip down Memory Lane.

I picked up my first 104 back in 2000, on sale at Guitar Center for $100.00.

Absolutely loved it!

Some years later, I picked up the 204, which I used for years, in my electric guitar system (while the 104 was delegated to the plugged-in) acoustic rack).

Still have them, to this day, but the rack stuff really hasn't been used much, since I went back to all pedals about six years ago. I wanted to pick up the pedal versions, but it never happened.

I used to refer to these rack boxes as "the hernia boxes", since they were so heavy and awkward to lug around all the time. I was lugging that shit around in a '96 Thunderbird - not exactly a musician-friendly vehicle.

The top is a Road Ready amp depth 6-space, and the bottom - a Grundorf amp depth 6-space.

The electric rack is on top.
The acoustic rack is on the bottom. Most of the effects came in from a BOSS GT-10. Those two Presonus Studio Channels were tube preamp/parametric EQ/compression, and worked very well.

Both rigs were wired for stereo.

Before I went with a rack/stereo setup for the acoustic, I used a little 1401 Acoustic Xciter pedal for a while.

I always preferred the Aphex Aural Exciter stuff over the BBE Sonic Maximizer versions. They served me well for a lot of years.

I still have an SPL Vitalizer in another rack.

That, too, has a nice sub-bass feature, but it's tough on speakers (Since there's a a lot more speaker cone travel, with lower bass dialed in).

It also has a stereo field-enhancing feature that expends the stereo field...hard to describe, but very nice. A really nice sweetener. I found that better suited for overall P.A. work, when I did sound jobs on some evenings and weekends, for extra money.

The "Big Bottom" feature on the Aural Exciter (LOL) really helps dial in and fine-tune low bass, somehow without abusing the speakers.

Maybe ask @griff10672 if he'll make you a pedal version? I know there are schematics for several of the rack units floating around, not sure about the 204 specifically.
Thanks for the tip!

I kind of gave up on Aphex processors for the pedlaboards, and have been really pleased with the results, overall - even without the Exciters. I really prefer pedals over rack equipment, for guitar work, and I'm glad I made the switch, back, I guess around 2018.

In addition to extra dials/controls on the 204 (compared to the 104), it also had balanced XLR inputs and outputs, and a standard IEC power cable input, rather than those horrible wall wart power supplies. I hate wall warts with a passion.

You know - both Aphex and BBE made apps for iPhone, with their processors, but it seems to have been a number of years since they've been supported, which is sad, because they worked beautifully, breathing life back into those funky-ass .mp3 files, for listening on the road.

In that instance, I preferred the BBE app.

I wish those apps were still around.

It is kind of like a BBE Sonic Maximizer that is more tweakable.
I felt the same way, when I decided to go with the Aphex, over BBE. It just seemed more...."musical-sounding", to my ears.
