So seeing the thread a while back about building a rack for under $750, it got me thinking. I have been playing through the Eleven Rack, and just wasn't quite happy. I thought the models sounded good, but not great. I also found myself tweaking every time I sat down to play, and wasting time. I was also only playing a few of the models and pretty much just using delay and reverb for effects. So I set out to build me a "ghetto" rack. Here is what I ended up with.

Juice Goose Power Distributor: $50
Voodoo Modded ADA MP-1: $300
Rocktron Intellifex: $75
Rocktron Velocity 150: $175, already had it, but that is what I paid for it about a year ago.

Out the door for $600. Not too bad. My impressions so far, and this is playing through an Avatar 2x12 with Hellatone 60L and WGS HM75. I like it. The cleans are nice, and the higher gain stuff such as 80's metal and hard rock are awesome. Obviously this is the strengths of the preamp. The lower gain ZZ Top, AC/DC type stuff ain't bad either, but I find that I like setting the drives higher on the Clean Tube channel for this, instead of using the Tube Distortion channel. I am still working on a Zeppelin type tone, and it just doesn't get there yet. It has a little too much upper mids, which may be more a result of the cab.

As far as the Replifex, this thing is beautiful. All I use are the delays and the verbs, and it is perfect. I have 5 or six presets setup, and that is all I need. Bypassed, I don't even know it is there.

All in all, this small rack with my pedals for different drives is making more than happy. If I want a tone I can't get out of the MP-1, I just go to me default clean patch, and use my pedals. I am finding that I play a lot more now, and also have learned more about how to get a certain tone, instead of constantly messing with the 11R.

I decided to also throw up some pics of the rest of my gear. I have a WGS Green Beret and Reaper on the way for the cab on the left, so that should help with some of the sounds I am looking for. The red cab has a Scumback Scumnico in it. The orange cab is the one that I am playing through with the MP-1. I have been using the Ampeg System Selector to switch between cabs, but am going to try something different, so if anyone wants it, shout. I sold my Behringer midi controller with the 11R, but am picking up a Roctron Midi Mate for its size and ease of just switching presets.

Anyway, figured some of you guys might like this,
Jason

Love the MP1 ! Great little pre-amps... Did you make that 19" rack yourself?

Actually I got it from www.nice-racks.com . Great name. For home use, I love it. My next one I will probably just buy a frame from www.trmguitarcabs.com , and put rails in it and finish it myself.

I have been very happy with the one from nice-racks though. It is made well, and shows no flex or wobble.

Nice looking gear you have there.

The power amp, makes a HUGE night/day difference.

The power amp is my next thing to buy. Sticking with the good deals I got on everything else, I will be keeping an eye out. What would you recommend for a home player? I would love one of the Fryettes, but can't justify that expenditure. I wanted to stay away from any of the 20/20's that run EL84's. Just never liked them.

Thanks for the help, and by the way, for that first rack you posted, how deep in the closet did you have to go find it, considering your normal rig?

Take care,
Jason

Let me aksk you this? Why not put the speaker cab on the amp? It has feet and would site better. Then put the Rocktron on top of the cab?

Is your cable too short? ;)

Then what keeps the rocktron from vibrating off.

There's nothing ghetto about this set up from the OP... Actually looks nice and tight, clean, and hey, some sick axes to boot.

Well done

Always liked the MP-1, back in the day that was "THE" rack piece. I really need to break mine out of storage, had it modded with the 3TM so it can real kick it!!

It is always fun to create a rack and get great tones!! Well done and keep us posted on your power amp choice. As Zachman said, it can make ALL the difference.
