My MIM Charvel came with 9s and the setup was pretty good out the box.

My tech is blocking the Floyd and I wanna go up to 10-52 in eflat, but not sure what the string tension will be like. My other guitars are all hardtails and I play 10-52s in e and eflat and they are perfect for me.

I’m curious if there’s a way to move up to 10-52 a half step down and still have the strings feel pretty slinky with a Floyd and the right neck adjustment and spring tension?

Maybe I should just start with 10s. Thoughts?

10's on a Charvel set up in E flat is how I do it. I have done this on one each of the USA, MIM, and MIJ Charvels with success. The USA guitar was the only one with a Floyd and I had it blocked as well. That was the best playing one and I don't like Floyds.

The two hardtails were stiffer than my LP's (of course) and the FLoyd one was actually pretty close to the LP's.

Interesting. OK, thanks. I think I will start with just regular 10s in eFlat. If I feel I can go up to 10-52s, I'll do that after.

Cheers.

I am weird with strats and tele's. For some reason they all feel different too me. They are either right where I need them to be or there is something off that I can't jive with.

What gauge do you use on your strats and teles?

Usually 9's because I keep them in E. Some guitars feel slinkier than others so I go a little heavier on the low strings with those. Keeps the E tighter when I drop it to D.

Cool. Yeah, that's why I'm thinking 10-52 in EFlat...I keep seeing people talking about using 2 springs instead of 3 or using different different tension springs.

Still, I'm wondering if I should just start out with 10-46 in Eflat and go up if I don't like that. Since Cantrell uses 10-46, must be ok, and for drop-D'ing in eFlat as well.

String tension is purely self preference. Strings are cheap, experiment!

I use .011“s on anything That is in std. Keep a few extra springs on hand just in general. I have bounced all over the place in the last fifteen years.
