Ive been wanting to nail SRV tones for some time on my Boogie, and have basically come to the conclusion that it aint gonna happen (well, not as close as I want). I mail ordered one of these little puppies (and I mean little - they are tiny!) and it come today.
Up to this point I had been using my MI Audio Crunch Box (which is just divine...) for heavy blues tones - kind of like Gary Moore (RIP) used to have with his strat. Well, anyway, that pedal is great and nails the whole 80s hard rock thing better than my Boogie as well. Dont get me wrong, the Boogie is unbeatable for classic thrash tones which is what I predominantly use it for. But its a little Hi-Fi, not gritty enough. I even stuck EL34s in the outer slots of my 395 power amp, which make makes a difference, a good one in my book, and gives me a switchable 6L6/EL34 option, which is tres fantastique...
Anyway, I bought the hustle drive cause Im too cheap to buy an OCD, and I definitely prefer that kind of sound vice the mid hump of a tubescreamer. and I wanted that "just on the point of breakup" option and a little more.
This pedal is way cool, and for the cash represents great value. The Gain range goes from having that little bit of Stevie Ray breakup, up to more mid gain (and slightly bass heavy) ZZ Top sounds. Its a dead simple pedal, 1 big gain KNOB and a flexible tone and volume. Its a fairly flat response, no speed bump mid hump. I think its also the kind of pedal you can just leave on all the time. Very responsive with the volume knob and CRUCIALLY fatter at low gain levels than the esteemed crunch box. Cleans up with the volume knob way better than than the Crunch box too. Likes my Fender Strat.....Plugged in my Ibanez RG and there was a degree of awkwardness between us...
Nice and small, but a pain in the arse, cause theres nay battery, gotta 9v adapter that mofo.
Well, I think its pretty much what I was after. Its low - mid gain, nice crunchy attack. You'd like it if you want a pedal that will get you into a lot of blues and country territory with single coils.
Otherwise, think Im now covered. Tone Library is now:
1. Boogie Mk 2C clean
2. Boogie Mk 2C clean + hustle drive
3. Boogie Mk 2C clean + Crunch Box
4. Boogie Mk2C metal scoop
5. Boogie Mk 3 Robo-gain Lead tone
This video is accurate (but the dude needs to cheer up or get some fresh air...
