Tossing out the 490/498's Im thinking. Wanting a little different flavor to keep my ears happy :D  I know we have some damn good ears and opinons on here so want your input.. Guitar is '01(non chambered) Gibson Standard, Amp is Gower Killer Kali++ using added 4th gain stage all the time, thru scumback M75/J75 speakers. Style of music is hard rock, rock, classic, with a little bit of Petrucci, Andy James, Sfogli and Andy Timmons thrown in there .. I play alot of leads along with rhythm. Been looking into MCP Angel Dust, Detroiter... WCR Godwoods... Aldrichs are always an option, Bare Knuckles as well I guess. Looking for both neck and bridge pickups. Feel free to shoot me your opinions. Thanks as always

Check out Bare Knuckle's Rebel Yell PU. Look up some Todd Duane clips on youtube to hear clips. He's ampaddict on here. Bout 99% sure he uses Rebels in all his LPs.

I will check out. Thanks

I'm in love with the Godwood. I has the right omph with any amp/setting and is crystal clear and articulate. The highs are smooth and refinied while the mids are raunchy and in-your-face. The low end is tight and percussive as well.

It also blends well with other brands. I'm running a Sheptone Blue Sky in the neck of my LP and both pickups interact extremelly well both in touch and dynamics when in the middle position.

Oh and Jim W. is a pleasure to deal with.

I had wcr darkburst in my LP axcess and loved them . I recently switched the bridge pup to a BK rebel yell and love it as well . The godwood was to dark for my axcess but my axcess is a bit darker than most les pauls for what ever reason .
IF you are looking for the hair metal tone either of these will get you there for sure .
Listen to the clips on the bk site and on the wcr site . They are a pretty accurate representation of what your gonna get out of the pups . Good luck on your hunt

You'll find out after changing them that the stock 490/498 are pretty decent after all. ;)

Yeah.. that's my only worry.. I don't dislike the stock pickups.. Am I going to gain a lot by going with bareknuckle or MCP?? Never used either company so I sure as hell don't know. I wouldn't mind throwing some zebras in my ebony standard tho...I like that look.

This. I have 2 Lesters and both have the 498/490.

I thought I could do better and went through the Godwood, Detroiter, Mule, Nailbomb, Cold Sweat, Aldrich, and BBQ (and several Duncans/Dimarzios). The 498 just sounds best to my ears.

If it is covered, run the screws below flush with the cover, raise closer to the strings than normal, and start adjusting from there. And oh yeah.....500k pots all around.

Thanks for the tip

Before you change your pickups, get rid of the stock Gibson 300k volume pots and put some CTS 500k pots in there. If you still want new pickups, there are tones of great choices out there. I personally lobe the Duncan Custom with a 59 in the neck.

Heres a thought . Wait it out and pick up some used boutique pups . Then if you don't want them you can get your money back .

I was in the same boat as you Bro.
I have a Les Paul Custom and I was looking for a
different flavor also. I have the same taste in Music
as you, Heavy Rock, 80's Metal, Classic, Lot's of Lead
work, etc...My Amps are Custom Audio OD100SE+ and
Splawn Quickrod. I had a Bare Knuckle Painkiller set in
for awhile. They're Killer Pup's but there was something
about the voicing that I just couldn't Gel with. They had
a Funky Midrange Honk that I just could not stop hearing.
So I finally decided on another pup change and that was the
Suhr Aldrich set and I'm more than satisfied!! I found the
Voicing that works for me, they're Smokin' Pup's in a Les Paul!
Everybody's ear is different but I have to say, it's the Suhr
Aldrich for my ear's.

BKP Alnico Nailbombs. I have them in my Les Paul Custom and they blow me away every time.

Thanks for the opinions guys.. Ive had aldrichs in my suhr moderns and liked them... Im guessing they would sound even punchier and more dynamic with my LP since it's a thicker more resonant piece of wood. Nailbombs sound interesting.

Aldrichs, Nailbombs, Rebel Yells, 490/498, Detroiter, Godwood... hmmmm.. Good thing is I do like the 490/498's... so not dis-satisfied. Just maybe looking to change things up a bit. Thanks guys and Happy Holidays to you all!!

I'll second and third the recomendation to replace all the pots with CTS 500K models... Only then will you know what the stock pups actually sound like...

My standard actually does have a Tundratone 50's wiring harness installed.. so she's upgraded with cts 500 and nos caps.

So if my LP Trad Pro has 300K pots, what would replacing with the 500K do to the tone?
