So I got my brandnew Splawn Nitro KT88 head yesterday. Put the tubes in, wired all up, all knobs turned down. Fired it up, and after I switched the standby, there was this freaking loud noise coming out of the cab. And I mean really (!) loud, I sat just in front of the cab... After checking the powertubes I found out one to be broken/bad or something. I changed the tube and it works now properly.

How can a bad tube cause this crazy noise when there's no input signal?

Anybody experienced anything similar?

I have the same amp,but I have never expereinced anything like that.If you can,I would highly suggest calling Scott himself.Who better to help you, than the man that made your amp. They are really good about taking phone calls and helping customers.I think it would be worth a call, even from Switzerland for such a great amp.

thanks for the answer. maybe it was just because of the bad tube, but I don't want to risk causing any more harm to the amp. I already sent him a message today, let's see...

what do you mean when you say 'broken or bad or something'?

when you changed the tube, what did you change it with?

where the power tubes Sinos?

Contacting Scott is what I would do too - and maybe post on the Splawn boards. If one tube was bad it would knock its better half out too and you'd still have 2 power tubes running at half power - so there would be a signal going through me thinks (and your impedance would be cut in half too). Did you buy this from a store, direct from Scott or used from someone else?

I meant one tube got probably damaged during shipment. I changed the tube with a JJ KT88 tube, and after this it seemed to work. But to me it's like you said, if one tube's not working, than it either halfes the power or it interrupts the entire signal. not this crazy high noise... I bought the amp direct from Scott, let's see what he tells me to do.

I have heard all kinds of crazy squalls whistles and odd noises when tubes go south. Jut crank that puppy up and go deaf!

Some tubes may be microphonic (meaning they emit a loud sound/ringing noise). I had a pre-amp tube in a Class A 15 watt combo that as soon as you would plug that 1 tube in, it would make like a loud ringing noise. Replace the tube with the exact same brand and type, and the ringing noise would go away. It was weird cause it was just that one tube. The ringing type noise this pre-amp tube made was almost defening....so I can only imagine what a wonky power tube sounds like.

talked to Scott, everything seems to be ok. it's a common "feature" when a tube goes south...

Glad you got it worked out. Scotts a good dude. He helped me when my Quick Rod was crapping out after a few minutes of playing. It was just the fx loop switch.
