Picked this sweet early model VHT Pittbull UL. Sounds fantastic. Tight as hell, not quite as thick as I imagined it. But I'm not sure how old the tubes are. Considering it has the original VHT labled preamp tubes. They all work fine, but that's pretty good for an amp that's nearly 20 years old. It has 6L6's, but I'll looking at some KT88's soon. The pre's look like Sovtek WA/B's. I pulled the first three and put in a Tungsol, Ruby HG+, and a Mesa EH. The Lead channel was a bit flat before, now it screams with faster response and more sizzle.

It sounds real clear and aggressive on the Lead channel. The rhythm channel is cool, but don't spend much time there. Lead with the gain at 9/10 is sex. Never been able to do that with any other amp. Lots of articulation and note separation.

It didn't really like any of my V30 cabs, but really comes to life through my Krank V12 loaded cab. Clip to come!

I gotta buy a VHT one day. The VHT 50CL left an impression on me years ago. Congrats.

Great amps congrats. Every time I offer up my Deliverance to someone I'm glad it doesn't sell. VHT amps kick ass.

Ultra-lead, hell yes. Doesn't get much better than that! Congrats on the NAD!

Want to sell your Avenger now that you have a new amp?

great score. I love pretty much all VHT/Fryette stuff. I have an older 50 CL with EQ+REV with a FB 4x12 w/P50E's and it kills...

Happy new amp day! I'm just in love with my Sig:X and kind of want to get one of each of the Fryette line...

yes, I can't read why the model is though.
Definitely check it out. Looks like G100 UL probably from between 1993-95.

It says PITBULL CLASSIC up in the right corner.

It doesn't have the eq, is that a bad thing?

Cool, congrats! Love those amps. How about a little comparison/review of all your amps? I've had major Soldano Avenger gas as of late.

I've said it before and Ill say it again. One of the best live guitar tones I've ever heard was some guy (great player) in some band playing some lame gig at the mall with a VHT Pitbull.
It still haunts me to this day.

Congrats!

I'm pretty sure that's the predecessor to the CLX, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

juggy told me for years that the ultra lead would be the one for me. told me to quit hording $1k amps, and to sell some stuff off to get the pittbull UL. at the time they were still going for 2300 used, so i was kinda wary.

i scored a 50/st with graphic in a trade with jaded faith. 1st great move.
traded a diamond nitrox for a pittbull classic 2x12 combo. 2nd great move.
paid $1600 for a tweed UL off this forums classified section, best move ever. i had found the tone i was looking for.
traded an engl savage SE for another UL in a flight case, mainly so my bro could have one for touring.
got a 3rd UL from ceasar in austin (i think it belonged to gsxrbusa once).

never been so happy with an amp before. always makes me smile when i plug in. kt88's for the win.

So your saying the UL is a good tone?

Sooo...4 days in and here's the scoop. Half power switch doubled as standby switch is way cool. Haven't spent much time in half mode. The GT 6L6's are sounding good, i Might have some Chinese KT88's coming my way so another update may be in order.

The Clean channel is nice, I pushed out the brite switch and pushed in the shift switch and a nice sparkle tone came out eliminating the flat sound before.

The Rhythm channel is crunchy and very dry sounding. Would take a boost nicely for modern metal, but I'm not boosting anymore. On it's own the channel is pretty gritty in a 800 type of way. Playing with the edge, shift and boost buttons offers some more attack, gain and a freq bump respectively.

The Lead channel is my favorite. Very open and clear at highgain settings. Gain at 9/10 is a dream to play. Percussive, tight, cutting sound. Not super wet and saturated like most other amps are. A good thing IMO. I have solved the thickness issue with more tweaking too. This amp sounds Goliath through my Krank cab.

My 3 key findings:
-Run the master volume high and channels low. (amp will sound thin otherwise)
-If you want more cut, sizzle and life from the gain, swap out the flat & dead sounding stock SovtekWA 12AX7 in V1. Although a rugged and dependable tube, it is very weak and sterile in an important tone spot. Install a more lively tube with more gain and bite like a Tungsol in V1.
-The onboard EQ is NOT A MUST HAVE for aggressive gain tones.
Steve Fryette has stated the non eq models pres & res dials have a much wider freq range than the EQ models. Allowing for freq tweaking close to that of the EQ models.
*Users with a UL EQ model, do not think by turning off the EQ that it results in the sound of non eq model UL. The EQ model UL pres and res controls have much less affect and impact than the non eq UL.
