So a couple of months ago, I posted a NLD.... (New LayAway Day).

Yea, I know! Lame as hell! Regardless, I finished paying her off finally. I had almost forgotten why I had agreed to purchase this guitar.... WHAM! She was my 1 in 100 LP. Plays like butter, sings acoustically, SCREAMS plugged up even though I'm definitely NOT a Burstbucker fan. She's an easy 9lbs, 60's neck and has a BEAUT of a top on her.

These pics are after a good ole' bath, fret board conditioning and restring. One question though, when I play this guitar, I get a black nasty coating on my fretting fingers/hand that seems to come from the strings/fret board. I figured it's bar funk * smoke, time, beer etc *. What's the best way to DEEP clean the rosewood board without hurting it? Speaking of the fretboard, check out this strait grained slab!

use this stuff to clean:

you can also used old english lemon oil but it will leave a yellow tinting to the woods over time. (there is also another reason why i dont recommend it, read further for more info)

to answer your question, rosewood is a very open-pourous wood. whoever had the guitar before you probably never cleaned the fretboard (ever) and then never played the guitar or properly maintained the neck with oiling during storage - when fretboards get dry, they soak up oils deep into the grain. that black, sometimes tacky stuff that you are talking about is the lemon oil i recommended (basically lemon scented lighter fluid) getting soaked into the pours of the rosewood grains and the woods then secreting the who knows WHAT out of it.

the lemon oil i posted is great for a deep cleaning action into the woods - used too often can cause the fretboard to shrink and pull away from the wood glue on the neck or cause the neck to bow because it is more cleaning agent then actual lemon oil like you would find for furniture (old english for example - reason it is better for cleaning)

do know that dry wood puts more stress on the truss rod and is also more prone to hairline cracking so dont over do it - i only lemon oil clean my necks once every season when it is time for a truss rod adjustment due to weather.

always follow the lemon oil i recommended with real tung-oil with no additives to replace the oils the wood needs and you have the best of both worlds - clean and well taken care of with no yellowing like real lemon oil. never condition a neck with just the lemon oil i mentioned without following it with tung oil (or tru-oil with no additives, but i prefer tung-oil), as it will cause the same symptoms as using lemon oil too much.

also, using too much tung-oil has the opposite effect. you can cause the wood to swell and contract - walking the frets out of the wood.

its a fine balance between each.

do it once a season for neck maintenance (cleaning and oil) and you will be fine. you may need to do it more often starting out to get the wood's overall condition balanced back out.

hope this helps
