I’m pretty stoked about this one, and a big thanks to @LPMojoGL for being my on-call international guitar phone a friend guitar advisor .

Been jonesing for another reissue. It’s been 15 years since owning a real reissue. Was looking online thinking I may have to take a trip to Tokyo, but as I was visiting my favorite local Japanese house of ill repu…. I mean guitar store, I saw they had a few reissues. I was immediate draw to one in particular, but they were all in locked glass cases and I had to come back when I had more time. They had this one and another 2013 R8.

Went back to play them today, it was night and day difference between this one and the 2012. Called Bobby to explain my thoughts and what I was observing and he was explaining to me the differences in specs and fueling me information real time. Doing web searches in Japan yield much different results than stateside, so I was able to make an informed decision.

It seems as a whole, 2017 seems like a well regarded year for reissues being a transitional year getting some of the best combinations of specs. Now add that this was a limited Japan only run of hand-selected hard rock maple top and 1959 Carmelita neck carve True historic spec and plastics, etc. It probably as close as you’ll get to an R9 but is an R8 and cost me R8 money.

I may be wrong as 2017 was a wonky and not well documented year, but I think it’s called
dirty lemon. It weighs in at 8.48 lbs and also appears to have a quarter sawn mahogany neck.

First time trying the custombuckers and so far I like them. I was worried about microphonics but they hold up well under gain and sound great clean.

I couldn’t be happier with this top on an R8

She's a beaut! I wish that I could find an R0 with a top and color like that.

Killer top man geeezzz. I had an R8 similar to yours in that it had a flame top and skinny neck. There’s some awesome oddball stuff out there. Custombuckers were potted up through 2018 by the way

Good to know. The Japanese resale value of guitars takes a huge hit for non-original pickups, so I was afraid they mighty be too unruly to use, but the are pretty good and glade I won’t have to swap them

Congrats!! That top is freaking gorgeous! The R7 I got in December also has a Carmelita neck, and that's my favorite carve they are doing on the reissues. Just enough beef but still easy enough to get around. It's really fantastic.

What’s your favorite Japanese store? They were one of the best part of living there

Congrats.. I just picked up a 2018 R7 yesterday.. excellent weight and 59 neck. I think they formalized all the true historic specs, carves, plastics, etc from 2017 and made them standard again going forward. They changed the tuners to single line and non green in color. The only thing about these custombuckers is they are a little underwound.. mine are both reading 7.6k and I need somewhere around 8.2k output wise.

Mine are readings closer to 7.9k each
