i play my axe through either krk rokit 6 speakers with ownhammer ir or latley ive been playing through a bridged art sla2 through a blackstar 1x10. i just enjoy the cab in the room sound. Especially after playing through a cab for a long time the speaker sims dont sounds great. Its just different i guess. It is nice just to have my axe plugged into my computer then routed to my speakers instead of having a 1x0 speaker laying in my living room with my rack.
I have never liked modelers into a computer/FRFR/Monitors either. Drives me nuts because it sounds like a recording of an amp instead of sounding like an amp.

That is why I have been looking at a lot of Axe vs. Axe II threads lately, to see if the upgrade in $$ is worth it if you dont use the cab sims.

its funny...at the moment i cant justify the axe fx II because if i went that route i would get a killer tube power amp like a vht or maybe the new atomic 50/50 and and a great 4x12 cabinet and i simply cant afford that. I still believe that the axe fx is the best thing to ever happen for guitar players, anytime i think i want to sell it i remember how i can play it in my apartment at low volumes even through a small cab/monitors/headphones . I think the ultra is worth getting still and i will be getting an axe fx II when i decide to go all in and get a great tube power amp, or like the matrix ss, and a great cab. regardless you can go anywhere with the axe and a poweramp and jam. im pretty happy with my axe fx ultra and art sla2, but i know i could be a little happier with the axe fx 2/ super nice poweramp/ killer cab! i cant see myself being happy with one $2-$4k amp, but i could see mysefl happy with the axe fx 2 and all the goodies that come along with it.

Going to pick up some monitors and play extremely quietly at night through them...but would still appreciate views as to getting the best headphone tone :)

PFL... I am having the roughest time getting record-quality sounds from the Axe FX II, and the zombies on the FAS forum aren't much help. The patches they share there are almost useless too.

If you are not dialing in tones for recording or stage PA, house PA systems, you may not need Studio Monitors.

You should be able to use home stereo speakers- some have a low mid bump that sounds good for Guitar anyway.

If you play back__________ and he sounds great through your stereo, you should be able to get inspiring tones through a modeler this way.

Headphones are a different animal, it's sometimes more inspiring to play at whisper volumes through speakers-again, not necessarily Studio Monitors.

With my guitar Tube Preamp ( ADA MP1 or H@K ) and FX and modeled Cab IRs I can play back through a small TV and it sounds about as good as the Guitarists on the Film Scores played back on the same TV( which is good ) - I just did it to see if it would work- but was surprised by the sound especially at very, very low volumes, some speakers are made for that.

I really need to try one of these.

I want to see if a tube head is really that much better?

I've about given up on using headphones. I bought one of those EHX pedal-size power amps and go to a Recto 212. Sounds pretty good at relatively low TV volumes. Better than any tube amp I've played turned down that low.

Nice idea to use just stereo speakers, too. I should give that a try.

i feel ya on the neighbors thing man... i got a neighbor in my apt building whos kid is like 4 years old, and all he does is scream at the top of his lungs, and stomp around like an elephant... you'd think he was 300 pounds or somethin... in any case they bitch and call the police every time i plug into my jca20... yes a 20 watter that isnt even on 1... well they bitch because they say im playing loud scary rock music... worst part is, there are no places to rent like a jam space or anything, so im pretty much screwed 8 months out of the year... :-\ I went with a pod xt pro... theyre cheap as hell, now cus the hd came out and yea they arent the greatest sounding, but you tweak em to sound pretty decent... enough to where you can put on some headphones and be able to jam a bit... I Just cant justify shelling out almost 3 grand *though it sounds great* for a processing unit that most likely im only going to be running through headphones... at that point just plug into your pro tools rig and use amplitube.
