An ES-335 has been high on my whishlist for a VERY long time. Tried some Gibsons and as usually you have to go thru a bunch of them to find a decent one. Tried some Heritage and liked them but there was always something that didn't tickle my fancy. One of the best ES-335s I ever played was the old Tokai owned by a good friend. I WAS plugged into a Dumble when I was playing it but the feel of the guitar was killer and the tones amazing.

So this past weekend, a Tokai ES-120 popped up on some classifieds sites here in Belgium. Contacted the seller and talked a bit about it. He bought it in 2005 and it never left his house, was in near mint condition. Although it originally came with Gibson Classic 57s, he replaced those with Peter Florance Voodoo '59 pickups. I know these and loved them in a fat tele I had so this was definitely a plus. And then there was the color, my favorite color for an ES-335 is natural and this one was indeed a natural with flamed maple front, sides and back. The price was right as well so my GAS was thru the roof.

I checked it out in person on Monday evening and only needed 10 minutes to fall in love with it. I was afraid the neck might be to much but it has a very nice medium C neck, just like my Tokai LP. Acoustically is sounded very full and balanced which was a good sign for things to come when I plugged in. The pickups needed some adjustment but other than that it played and sounded amazingly good. So I took it home, plugged it into my '73 JMP and wailed for 2 hours only using a boost to get the Marshall over the top.

Compared to my Tokai LP, the ES-120 sounds a lot more open, it doesn't have that grab-you-by-the-balls low end of the LP but it sounds big nevertheless. It definitely nails some tones I was trying to get from the LP but couldn't totally nail. The pickups sound amazing, the neck pickup sounds big and smooth but has plenty of clarity, the bridge rocks harder, very balanced and articulate.

Very cool, ES335 style guitars are cool. I know what you mean about being more open, that is the way I feel about my Gretsch 6120.

Its weird to see how the neck wood changes, I think I am just used to seeing ones that are painted.

Can you give me an idea in Euros what those Tokai's go for on the used market? My buddy is looking for an ES-335 guitar, but right now only has the money for an Ibanez Artcore...

Congrats Yoeri, very cool guitars!

If the Gibson police come in to get ya I got your back :gethim:

Yoeri's getting old :D

Congrats, its a beauty.

They don't pop up often on the 2nd hand market, the old eighties Tokai ES go for around 1400 euros. The newer ES-120/130s will go for around 1000euro or so. That's what I paid for this one WITH the replacement pickups.

LOL, I certainly TRIED to find a Gibson I loved but for the prices they go for, I expect something better. As I'm not willing to pay CS Gibson prices, I searched for alternatives. All the Tokais I have played (+10) have been at least really good and some were simply amazing instruments.

Non MV Marshalls, ES- and LP-style guitars.. what IS happening to me?????????

Beautiful guitar....if I ever get some spare cash again I'd love to own one. It's just a different tone than anything else.

Awesome!

I'd love a 339 myself!

Yeah I considered getting one, they were fairly cheap in the UK but they were impossible to get. Furthermore, Gibson's QC on the guitars I DID play was not convincing me to buy one sight unseen.

The last couple of days, all I used were the Tokai and 1 of 2 boost pedals in front of my 73 Marshall. Set the Marshall so it just brakes up and take it from there. So many great tones to be had from an ES335, amazing. I discovered though that the tone control for the bridge pickup is going bad, it doesn't work all the time and I need to occasionally tap it to make it work again. The "travel" of the volume controls is also not very even so I might just replace all the pots with some quality CTS stuff.

Nevertheless, this guitar is blowing me away. I also really loved how you can get this very musically feedback from it and it sounds surprisingly rawk when used with more gain. doesn't have the thumping low end of a LP but still ballsy and BIG sounding. And finally, 1 other fun thing about this guitar is how you can FEEL it reasonate against your body, like the whole guitar is moving, great feeling!

Not sure why but I always had a thing for natural ES335s, black is to much BB to me and red is just red, I mean, everybody has a red ES335

I start to think an ES335 might be the most versatile guitar around. I plugged it into my rack setup yesterday and it sounded killer for heavier tones as well. The cleans were really really cool.

That thing is gorgeous! I hope it sounds and plays as good as it looks, congrats.

OOOHHHH! Congrats dude, beautiful guitar!! Rock the shit out of her man! Very sexy!

Very nice! Cool score. I bet it sounds great  Changing pots in those is a pain
