New Gear Day!
OK, I decided to pull the trigger and pickup a Kemper. I wrestled over whether to get it from King Guitar or Sweetwater. I went with Sweetwater only because I have a long history with one of the reps there...maybe next time.
First thoughts:
At first, I wasn't blown away by the Kemper. The tones seemed a bit stiff, overly bright and not musical. But, after some tweaking, I started to get some decent sounds. I also bought some of the resale profiles available...they sound pretty darn good. The really interesting thing is that the recordings I made sound better durning playback then they do while recording them. I assume that is due to the feel of the Kemper...further tweaking should remedy that.
Now, the really good news. When I compared the tracks recorded with the Kemper to the tracks I recorded with my Bogner the Kemper sounded better to my ears. My studio is very small and my skills at mic placement are mediocre at best. The Kemper bypasses all of that...it takes a bunch of variable out of the "mix."
This result was my motivation for getting the Kemper in the first place...SUCCESS!
So, I'm really dig'n this thing. I suspect, as my tweaking skills get more refinded, I will be able to tease out some great amp tones pretty quickly.
Oh, on a side note, my bass player played his bass in to the Kemper using the Bassman profile...it sounds great...he was blown away and decided to use the Kemper for his bass recordings going forward...I'm lookin for bass specific profiles.
Now, where are some more great sounding profiles and what are they called? I'd love to get a Andy Timmons sounding profile.
