I've been wanting a Steinberger GL as long as I could remember. Unfortunately I can't justify the extremely high prices they go for these days. So what CAN I do? Buy a licensed Steinberger, Spirit, or Synapse that looks similar. I hit as many forums and got as many opinions as possible and from what I found it seemed that the old Hohner G2T is one of the better representations out there.

It plays extremely well, great intonation, very surprising for a Hohner guitar, which I've thought was just cheap crap all this time. This piece is well made, with attention to detail. From what I've read these are likely made entirely out of Maple, which would explain the extremely stable feeling I get from it. The pickups are James Tyler JTV59's which sound awesome. Plenty of output, but mellow out really nice.

I really like the portability of this guitar. I could take it, my DV Mark 2x12, and Orange Micro Terror on my Motorcycle if I really wanted, and have plenty of volume to jam!

Since picking it up I cleaned/polished the paint, got rid of old dust/grime, oiled/conditioned the fret board, polished the frets, cleaned the pots and 3 way switch, cleaned/oiled the strings, lubricated the bridge, adjusted bridge tension, moisturized the tolex, vacuumed the case, and re-glued the case lid strap.

Next to my Steinberger GM-4T

Case Closed.

After jamming on it for a few days, I have to say I'm blown away. The tone that comes from this stick is amazing. Definitely deceiving. All sorts of walls are being broke down for me lately.

Man, i have always wanted one of these. Just can't justify the cost or the real deal or the cost of upgrading a copy.

As long as you get a good quality one, the most it will likely need is a good setup, clean up, and some pickups. Well worth it, but then again I'm biased since I own one. Mine came with decent pickups, just needed a thorough cleaning and setup.

congrats

is there an adapter or are you stuck with double ball end strings?

I had a Spirit 5 string bass, getting strings was a problem. They had an adapter but Gibson wasn't really support them at the time so string and part availability was poor.

Yes, there's an adapter to use any string you want, it has Allen head screws in addition to the double ball end strings. I rather like the double ball strings, I find they are much less prone to breakage. The gm4t has the trans trem and allows to go up a couple steps in tuning, the strings do this with ease. Without the double ball end, I have a feeling the strings would break much easier.
