referring specifically to amps and efx. sounds like robin finck is a big user of LP's and schecters. I was watching the All that could have been live dvd (highly recommended!) and at one point he's playing some oriental stringed instrument looks like.

i'm guessing they use axe fx like everybody else but maybe marshalls/mesas live?

and what amps did they use to record the downward spiral and the fragile? reptile and eraser are devastating.

check out that dvd, it's badass.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the last NIN live performance held before the AxeFX either came to the market or became popular? Mid-late '09, right?

Yep, June 2009. I saw their final performance at Sonosphere in the UK.

Recently NIN (well Trent) has been using NI guitar rig / Reaktor almost exclusively, but on the downward spiral the distorted guitars recorded by Trent (not Adrian Below - god only knows what he was using) were mostly Marshall JMP1 preamp, direct into the desk / ProTools and then manipulated by a plugin called Turbo Synth (which AFAIK ProTools do not make any more). That said TDS was recorded over a fairly long period and there are so many different guitar textures on it I would guess that there were a stupid amount of amps/preamps actually used, I know some of the effects on TDS were done with older Zoom stuff (the half rack one I can't remember the number of 9001, 9005 something like that!).

I know that some of the distorted sounds on Broken were done by overloading an old Mackie desk into protools, not sure if they did this on TDS.

Live NIN used Mesa gear in the power section (Simul 295/395) and I don’t know for pre's but I would guess Marshall JMP1, Mesa Studio etc. on the TDS tour - def not Axe-Fx!

At one time they were selling their tour used gear on Ebay and there were some Mesa Stilettos in there, not sure what tour exactly.

Yeah, he always said his recorded guitar sounds for Fragile and before were Marshall JMP preamp into a Zoom for speaker simulation because he particularly liked that on the zoom. either 9001 or 9003, I think? But live I have no idea.

Yup the Zoom was either a 9030 or 9050 half rack unit - both well out of production!

interesting, thx for replies. stiletto? wtf? i used to have a JMP1/monobloc rig and it was definitely hostile sounding like reptilish.
