The Wolf Hoffman mod. Get a distortion pedal, put it last in your chain right before the amp, and the volume knob acts like a MV. After reading how Wolf used a Dist + this way, I decided to try it out. Picked up a 45$ Joyo Uzi(after JHS pedal guy liked it) and damn if it doesn’t work great. I have the OD1X first, then the Uzi, to amp. I set the 72 SL volumes up to where I’m just getting some breakup; so the power section is definitely cooking. Then, the Uzi attenuated the signal down to as quiet as you want with the vol knob, and the gain is up at noon. Very thick modern type Marshall tone. Unity gain/vol is when the Uzi vol is up at 4pm so there’s a good sweep of vol choices.
The Uzi is a clone of a BE pedal but it has a mid knob instead of a presence, and the bias knob dials in loose-tight feel like the Airis Savage Drive. No need for attenuators unless you like that sound.

Pretty sure a volume pedal at the end of the chain would do the same thing. Yes?

Sounds like the pedal is providing some grit.
Ah. Ok. Doing what Wolf does has more cool factor anyway. I don’t have any experience with NMV amps except my 65 DRRI. Even the JTM45 I had a master mod.

I actually have no idea....And, I'm not sure why a distortion pedal works this way, vs a boost pedal that doesn't affect the overall volume. The Ultimate Drive (OCD clone) when I run that in place of the Uzi pedal, doesn't affect the volume and gives more 'clean' gain and more clarity, but it has its limitations in how saturated it gets the 72. The Uzi gets thick and has stupid amounts of gain (with another boost in front of it, in my case the OD1X.)
I'm tempted to buy a BE OD to compare the 2 and see...although the BE is probably smoother.

I bought the Uzi on Tom’s recommendation and it’s a very cool pedal. It works great as a boost for a more aggressive alternative to an OD or TS.
